Medical Specialist Grade 1 to 3 (Psychiatry) (Tygerberg Hospital) at SADOCS

• Specialist knowledge in the assessment and management of general adult psychiatry conditions including emergency psychiatry and eating disorders.
• Knowledge of eating disorders and obesity (bariatric) psychiatry.
• Advanced clinical knowledge and skills in adult psychiatry. Administration of electroconvulsive therapy. Clinical governance and service planning. Teaching and supervision of health professionals at multiple levels.
• Evidence-based practice and research methodology. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to lead, supervise, and work in multi-disciplinary teams. Professional resilience and adaptability.
• Commitment to Batho Pele principles and WCG values: Caring, Competence Accountability, Integrity, Innovation, Responsiveness. Demonstrated expertise in the management of eating disorders and bariatric psychiatry.
• Valid Driver’s licence. Willingness to travel. Willingness to participate in the after-hours duty roster.
• Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Psychiatry.
• Grade 1: None after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Psychiatry.
• Grade 2: A Minimum of 5 years appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or recognized Health Professional Council in respect of foreign qualified employees) as a Medical Specialist in Psychiatry.
• Grade 3: A Minimum of 10 years appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or recognized Health Professional Council in respect of foreign qualified employees) as a Medical Specialist in Psychiatry.
• Provide high-quality specialist psychiatric clinical services to adult patients across inpatient, outpatient, liaison, eating disorder, and bariatric psychiatry services.
• Support safe, efficient, and ethical service delivery by participating in clinical governance activities, service planning, and quality-improvement initiatives within the department.
• Deliver structured teaching and supervision to undergraduate students, registrars, medical officers, and other health professionals to support training and clinical competence.
• Participate in academic activities and contribute to research relevant to psychiatry, including supervision, publication, and continuing professional development.
• Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Psychiatry.
• Grade 1: R 1 341 855 - R 1 422 810 per annum, Grade 2: R 1 531 032 - R 1 623 609, Grade 1: R 1 773 222 - R 2 212 680 per annum A portion of the package can be structured according to the individual’s personal needs.
