    Museum Educator - Family Programming

    Job Summary

    • This role reports to the Education Manager and the Head of Centre for Art Education (CFAE). The purpose of Museum Educator is to co-ordinate, organise and facilitate the Family Programming pillar of the Centre for Art Education, including monthly Family Learning Workshops, the Quarterly Children’s Holiday Programmes, assisting with organising Members and Adult Workshops, as well as organising the MOCAA Art Club alongside the Educational Institutions Museum Educator. The Museum Educator will work closely with the CFAE team to support other education programmes as and when needed, including Community tours and workshops until a Community Facilitator is appointed. This is a front-facing role where you will interact and communicate with the general public, students and teachers, and local and international visiting groups.

    Key Responsibilities 

    Family Programme Coordination and Teaching

    • Coordinate Family Programmes, including workshops, guided tours, and gallery activities, with particular reference to:
    • Monthly Family Learning workshops that take place on the last Saturday of each month March, July, September and December School Holidays
    • Assisting with organising quarterly/as needed Members and Adult workshops
    • Coordinating and teaching the annual MOCAA Art Club alongside the Educational Institutions Museum Educator
    • Schedule Family Programmes on the Education digital calendar
    • Conceptualise and plan family tours and workshops for diverse age groups
    • Support guided educational tours during large group visits in collaboration with the Educational Institutions Museum Educator
    • Develop teaching and learning resources aligned to exhibition
    • Deliver varied visitor engagement activities, including workshops, tours, facilitated dialogues, and art-making
    • Conceptualise, plan, and facilitate practical and theoretical workshops for learners, families, adults, and teachers

    Administration

    • Recording of all programming numbers for the Family Programme
    • Compile art material and resource lists for Family Programme workshops
    • Coordinate transport with the Education Administrator for the MOCAA Art Club
    • Report on all Family Programmes for the annual report
    • Maintain digital records of Family Programme lesson and workshop plans
    • Coordinate and order catering for Family Programmes
    • Assist the Education Administrator with monitoring and replenishing CFAE stock (consumables, art materials and food)
    • Submit a weekly payment schedule to the Education Administrator and Education Manager
    • Document Family Programmes and archive photos on the CFAE Sharepoint
    • Liaise with the Institutional Advancement team on Family Programme coordination

    Partnerships and Relationship Building

    • Correspondence with parents, schools, tertiary institutions, art community, education departments, organisations concerning the planning, booking and scheduling of Family programmes
    • Assist in the development and implementing new resources linking museum exhibitions to families and the MOCAA Art Club
    • Liaison with key stakeholders, including parents, members, schools, education departments, and educational institution
    • Distribution of holiday and family programme information to schools and CFAE network groups

    Planning, Meetings, Exhibitions

    • Attendance of weekly CFAE meetings (compulsory)
    • Participation in weekly alignment meetings across the museum departments as required
    • Conceptualising and planning of all holiday programming and family learning workshops as well as facilitating
    • Regular display of artwork in the CFAE classrooms
    • Assistance with the annual MOCAA Art Club exhibition

    What you will need to be successful in the role

    Qualifications

    • Completed degree or diploma such as a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in art history, or an equivalent qualification
    • An art teaching qualification.

    Requirements

    • Demonstrated passion for and commitment to art education, with an openness to ongoing learning
    • Strong interest in contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora
    • Fluency in isiXhosa and/or Afrikaans is strongly recommended
    • Willingness to work flexibly, including occasional weekends and after-hours, in line with museum operating hour

    Experience

    • Minimum of 3 - 5 years of art/design teaching experience in formal or informal arts education sector
    • Museum education experience is advantageous
    • Teaching across primary and high school age groups is strongly recommended
    • Working with learners or adults with Special Educational Needs is strongly recommended
    • Extra-mural or non-traditional learning environment experience is advantageous

    Core Skills and Competencies

    • Good communication skills and the ability to impart knowledge in the context of a guided tour and workshop to learners, children, adults and teachers at various levels
    • Confidence in addressing and working with diverse groups in an educational context
    • Practical and theoretical art teaching skills in a variety of mediums and techniques
    • The ability to write and design lessons and workshops related to exhibitions for a variety of different audiences
    • Strong administration and coordination skills. This role involves extensive administration so you need excellent organisation skills
    • Excellent research skills
    • Ability to work independently and deliver work within the agreed timeframes
    • Effective, high level of problem-solving skills
    • Dynamic and energetic teacher with effective classroom management skills
    • Collaborates effectively with diverse museum audiences to create engaging tours and educational experiences
    • A co-operative team player and people’s person
    • Ability to prompt conversation, questions and dialogue
    • Strong computer skills, including the use of Microsoft Office applications

    Knowledge

    • Practical art teaching methodology for small and large groups
    • Knowledge of art history
    • Knowledgeable about contemporary art from Africa and its Diaspora
    • A working knowledge of the National Curriculum Statement of South Africa and the CAPS curriculum in Visual Art and Design at GET and/or FET level or equivalent
    • Knowledge of the IEB Visual Art Curriculum or other international Visual Art curricula is a recommendation  

    Professional Registration or License Requirements:

    • SACE (South African Council for Educators) registration is a strong recommendation.
