O&M Engineer – Solar PV & Hybrid Systems at AltGen South Africa

Role Overview

• A renewable energy company is seeking an O&M Engineer to support the ongoing operation, maintenance, and optimisation of solar PV and hybrid energy systems.
• This role requires a technically competent individual with strong fault-finding capability, experience in remote monitoring and data analysis, and the ability to support commissioning activities. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring optimal system performance, minimising downtime, and delivering accurate performance insights across a portfolio of assets.

Key Responsibilities
Operations & Maintenance

• Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on solar PV and hybrid systems.
• Diagnose and resolve system faults across inverters, batteries, and associated electrical infrastructure.
• Respond to system alerts and breakdowns, ensuring minimal downtime and effective resolution.

Fault Finding & Technical Support

• Conduct detailed fault-finding and root cause analysis on underperforming or failed systems.
• Provide technical support to site teams and escalate complex issues where required.
• Maintain accurate records of faults, interventions, and resolutions.

Remote Monitoring & Data Analysis

• Monitor system performance remotely using SCADA or monitoring platforms.
• Analyse performance data to identify inefficiencies, trends, and optimisation opportunities.
• Track key performance metrics including availability, yield, and system losses.

Commissioning Support

• Assist with the commissioning of new solar PV and hybrid systems, including testing and verification.
• Ensure systems are operating in line with design specifications and performance expectations.
• Support handover processes from EPC to O&M.

Reporting & Performance Management

• Compile and deliver regular performance reports, including technical analysis and recommendations.
• Provide insights into system performance, downtime, and corrective actions.
• Support internal and client reporting requirements with accurate and structured data.

Experience & Qualifications
Essential

• Proven experience working on solar PV and hybrid energy systems in an O&M or technical role.
• Strong competency in fault finding and troubleshooting across PV and battery systems.
• Experience with remote monitoring platforms and performance analysis tools.
• Ability to analyse operational data and translate findings into actionable insights.
• Experience supporting or leading commissioning activities.
• Relevant technical qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related field (Diploma, BTech, or Degree).

Desirable

• Familiarity with SCADA systems and data acquisition platforms.
• Experience working across multiple sites or asset portfolios.
• Understanding of performance metrics such as PR (Performance Ratio) and system availability.
• Knowledge of South African grid requirements and standards.
