    Software Engineer – Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Development

    The Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) organisation is responsible for developing key services that power Oracle's cloud solutions across all layers of the IaaS/SaaS/PaaS stack. Our primary focus areas are scale, performance and reliability.

    We can provide you the opportunity to build and operate a suite of massive scale, integrated cloud services in a broadly distributed, multi-tenant cloud environment.  OCI is committed to providing best of breed cloud products that meet the needs of our large enterprise customers who are tackling some of the world’s biggest challenges. We are still building out our portfolio of cloud services and as such engineers at all levels have a real chance to make an impact and shape the future of Oracle’s cloud platform.

    OCI Cape Town is currently looking for hands-on engineers to build out an exciting new team working on a suite of OCI-native services in the digital media space. We are building services from the ground up that run the gamut from content transcode and streaming to information extraction and analytics. From a technology perspective, this is a greenfield development environment with a huge amount of autonomy, leaving us free to build and innovate without being encumbered by legacy products and services.

    We are looking for passionate, technical leaders who

    • Have a proven track record of delivering high-scale, high-impact solutions
    • Can design highly scalable services and make the appropriate tradeoffs between performance, reliability and maintainability
    • Have a solid grounding in computer science fundamentals, who would be at home picking up a new programming language or problem domain
    • Enjoy working in an innovative and collaborative environment
    • Can act as escalation points for our operational support on an on-call roster basis

    Core requirements

    • Bsc or Msc degree in Computer Science or related field. Equivalent experience with a proven track record may be substituted.
    • Typically has 5+ years or more relevant experience.
    • Strong knowledge of C, C++ or Java, and experience with scripting languages such as Python or Perl, etc.

    Plus preferred experiences that we are looking for

    • Experience in digital media workloads (transcoding, streaming, DRM, codecs etc)
    • Software development experience with distributed, highly scalable, multi-node environments
    • Strong understanding of virtual machine technologies, networking and storage systems
    • Strong troubleshooting and performance tuning skills
    • Extensive Linux experience, both command-line and system level knowledge
    • Strong understanding of databases, NoSQL systems, storage and distributed persistence technologies.
    • Ability to design, develop and troubleshoot software programs across database, network and application stacks.

    Example Responsibilities:

    • Improve and implement best practices across director’s organisation in software engineering.
    • Drives design and planning of services to identify and mitigate risk of failure to provide highly available services.
    • Writes and reviews code for cloud native services written in a microservice framework with REST based APIs
    • Implement and analyse service metrics to drive service improvements
    • Set a high-quality bar for services right from the design stage through to production e.g. end to end testing, monitoring and alerting.
    • Design, develop, troubleshoot and debug software programs for databases, applications, tools, networks etc.
    • As a member of the software engineering division, you will take an active role in the definition and evolution of standard practices and procedures. You will be responsible for defining and developing software for tasks associated with the developing, designing and debugging of software applications or operating systems.
    • Work is non-routine and very complex, involving the application of advanced technical/business skills in area of specialization. Leading contributor individually and as a team member, providing direction and mentoring to others. BS or MS degree or equivalent experience relevant to functional area. 7 years of software engineering or related experience.

    Detailed Description and Job Requirements
     

    • Design, develop, troubleshoot and debug software programs for databases, applications, tools, networks etc.
    • As a member of the software engineering division, you will assist in defining and developing software for tasks associated with the developing, debugging or designing of software applications or operating systems. Provide technical leadership to other software developers. Specify, design and implement modest changes to existing software architecture to meet changing needs.
    • Duties and tasks are varied and complex needing independent judgment. Fully competent in own area of expertise. May have project lead role and or supervise lower level personnel. BS or MS degree or equivalent experience relevant to functional area. 4 years of software engineering or related experience.
