Information on the Country of Assignment
Living conditions in Johannesburg, South Africa

The security situation in South Africa demands constant vigilance (UNDSS security level 3). All visitors and staff are advised to make prior travel arrangements from the airport and to avoid arriving late at night. While traveling in a car or taxi, all belongings are to be placed in the trunk or on the car floor, out of sight. Main health hazards are: HIV - throughout the country; and, Malaria - mainly in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Kwazula-Natal provinces. South Africa is a cosmopolitan area with high standard of living.

There is a two-tier healthcare system in South Africa with a large subsidized public sector and a small, but very high quality, private sector. Though there is excellent healthcare available in South Africa, it is largely limited to the private sector and comes at a high price. It is essential, therefore, to have international health insurance in order to access a good quality of care.
