    Process Engineer

    • The purpose of the job is to support the process engineering strategy with respect to meeting production targets, providing process engineering technical support and identifying improvement opportunities.
    • The incumbent will be expected to contribute unit-specific technical input into daily assurance process, taking upstream and downstream units into account.
    • The incumbent will report to the Engineering Lead and will not have any direct reports.

    FUNCTIONAL OUTPUTS:

    • Accountable to define "Operate within agreed parameters" (OWAP) and optimum window in which the business operating units should be operated
    • Accountable to monitor and identify improvement opportunities to ensure plants operate within the OWAP
    • Understand optimum operating windows, deviations and preventative measures
    • Assimilate and contextualise data for inputs into Volume Protection Plan (VPP) and assess VPP effectiveness
    • Contribute technical inputs into VPP and identify risk of deviation
    • Interpret and understand own business unit drivers for input into improvement plans
    • Deliver technical track and process related inputs required on small to medium projects (tier 3-5) in accordance with sound established engineering principles and standards to satisfy business requirements
    • Accountable for implementation of reporting as required.
    • Accountable for his/her own safety and safety and for implementation and compliance to the systems aimed at ensuring safety.

    JOB REQUIREMENTS:

    In addition to a pre-employment medical examination, some positions may require a physical fitness assessment as part of the normal selection criteria.

    Qualifications:

    • A minimum of a BSc (Chemical Engineering) or BEng (Chemical) engineering degree (Must)

    Experience:

    • A minimum of 6-8 years’ relevant experience (Must)
    • Proven track of satisfactory performance (Must)
    • Knowledge of the SSO value chains and Gas Circuit (Gas Reforming) will be a strong advantage
    • Conceptual and strategic development experience will be an advantage

    Functional / Technical:

    • Proactive identification of process deviations, threats, risks and opportunities through monitoring of unit operations and ensure inclusion into improvement plans/VPP
    • Compile loss accounting and translation of losses into improvement plans
    • Monitor and interpret performance on technical drivers, constraints and levers on unit operations level, taking upstream and downstream units into account
    • Ensure unit and system heat maps and reporting on efficiencies, losses and integrity concerns are executed
    • Ensure data assimilation and contextualisation to identify opportunities for input into process related improvement plans/technical landscape
    • Accountable for shutdown support with respect to process equipment integrity and improvement idea generation
    • Ensure process integrity of equipment is restored through inspections and recommendation of improvement opportunities during shutdowns
    • Monitor effectiveness of VPP and adherence to yields supplied for planning and scheduling processes
    • Ensure that reports are issued as per requirements
    • Monitor energy usage and identify improvement opportunities
    • Ensure that plant reliability, volume and unit cost are quantified and improved
    • Ensure process engineering input into operating manuals, including start-up and shutdown procedures as well as training manuals
    • Provide process engineering support and input to small to medium projects (tier 3-5) such as:
    • Process design (conceptual, basic engineering and some detail)
    • Participation in design and safety reviews
    • Ensure appropriate governance are applied with regard to the process scope (conformance to standards and specifications)
    • Support start-up and commissioning
    • Supply techno-economical input into business cases
    • Compliance with project milestones and metrics
    • Conceptual design of potential plant improvement initiatives
    • Ensure that optimum solutions are achieved for opportunities identified
    • Analyse and understand the root cause of deviations that occurred on unit operations
    • Ensure quality inputs of own work
    • Ensure plant basic documentation and systems are in place and at required standard (mass balances, energy balances, fingerprinting, MSR's, operating envelopes/philosophies, critical parameters and levers and predictive monitoring tools)
    • Comply to internal Sasol guidelines and policies
    • Ensure well documented “Root Cause” analyses for all significant loss incidents and major equipment failures
    • Actively identify process safety threats and ensure that mitigation plans are in place
    • Technical input into Hazops, PFD and MFD reviews (Fulfil role of technical representative)
    • Demonstrate fundamental documentation and tools are in place and still relevant
    • Compliance with internal guidelines & policies e.g. MOC process followed
