Each Product Manager has a portfolio that may include specific business units, product verticals, and systems. Within the scope of their portfolio, the Product Manager collaborates with business stakeholders and operations to develop and manage a roadmap by identifying, defining and prioritising opportunities for growth and improvement. While the fulfilment of strategic objectives should be the primary driver, ongoing requests for improvements and maintenance needs should also be assessed and appropriately planned.
The function is responsible for clearly communicating requirements to the DS&T (Data, Solutions and Technology) team in a timely manner (thereby optimising their output), and collaborating with Product Architects to design suitable solutions. While the Product Architect is responsible for the technical integrity of solutions, the Product Manager is responsible for ensuring that they are fit for purpose. Jointly, they should ensure that solutions are designed with scalability and maintainability in mind.
Communication forms a key aspect of the role. The Product Manager should keep business stakeholders informed of project progress and delivery timelines, and is responsible for user acceptance testing, and handover of solutions to business stakeholders. He/she is responsible for the provision of training material, and the maintenance of product documentation for purposes of promoting product knowledge and understanding.
This role reports into the Head of Product Management and interfaces extensively with Product Architects, Operations and Heads of Business Units within their portfolio.
Key Responsibilities:
Partnering with business units to identify their goals, requirements and relative prioritisation.
Critically evaluating requirements and priorities to ensure that sound reasoning and long term thinking are applied.
Identifying areas of friction within business processes and systems and pro-actively researching and recommending solutions.
Planning requirement gathering activities well ahead of launch dates.
Documenting requirements and design ideas.
Encouraging input on designs from Project Managers, Product Architects and BSAs, and business representatives in order that the best ideas are generated collaboratively.
Documenting final designs, with input from DS&T, such that there is a record of implementation details that would not be obvious upon first sight of the system, but are useful to obtaining context and applying or extending these solutions in future projects.
Providing feedback to business units on the status of requests and projects.
Ensuring effective feedback loops from DS&T engagements back to business stakeholders on system limitations, scope change or other critical feedback.
Facilitating user acceptance via demos and/or testing.
Creating (and sometimes presenting) training material/guides on tech solutions.
Assisting business in implementing effective workarounds where needed, and managing configuration of key systems that do not require DS&T’s input.
Team collaboration:
Communicating on the status and priority of projects such that the team can collectively determine group priorities and a group roadmap
Participation in peer’s requirements elicitation/design sessions to facilitate knowledge sharing across portfolios
