    Job description

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

    • Postgraduate supervision of Masters and Doctoral candidates.
    • Research: Conduct research, supervise master’s and PhD’ students; apply for funding for research projects; initiate and maintain national and international networks; participate in evaluating ethics and research proposal; ensure effective research administration.
    • Note: Although the position is situated on the Mahikeng campus, it is not required for the successful incumbent to be physically present on campus on a full-time basis.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    TEACHING & LEARNING AND HIGHER DEGREE SUPERVISION

    • Involvement in teaching activities in the faculty, including postgraduate supervision, critical reading, examination, moderation, and any other responsibility as required.
    • Active participation in the postgraduate research methodology workshops.

    ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP, MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION

    • Involvement in Administration and Management responsibilities.
    • Participate in leadership roles within the faculty, membership in faculty committees as and when required, and administration and service to the university by serving on institutional structures.
    • Active participation in attending Faculty research initiatives such as writing retreats. Mentor to emerging and established scholars.

    SOCIAL RESPONSIVENESS AND INDUSTRY INVOLVEMENT

    • Sharing of expertise and service to the scientific community. Involvement in community engagement and social cohesion, including media commentary, serving on review structures inside and outside the faculty/university and promoting the university image and internationalisation.

    PERSONAL RESEARCH, INNOVATION AND/ OR CREATIVE OUTPUTS

    • Conducting own research which fits into the faculty’s focus areas. Creative research output by the level of appointment. This includes publication, conference attendance and presentation, workshops, and colloquia.

    Minimum requirements

    • A PhD or LLD in any field of Law.
    • A minimum of ten (10) years’ teaching experience.
    • A minimum of 5 years’ experience of completed supervision of master’s degree students and completed promotion or co- promotion of LLD/PhD students.
    • Research expertise demonstrating substantial research quality and relevant impact, reflected in the publication of articles in accredited journals and/or books published by pre-eminent academic publishers

    ADDED ADVANTAGES & PREFERENCES:

    • Postdoctoral fellows - recruited and managed.
    • Experience in national or international funding applications.
    • Panel memberships (e.g. NRF).
    • NRF rated.
    • Social responsiveness (including): Provision of expertise to organisations, involvement in the broader community and involvement in research collaboration.

    KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Knowledge of software programs for qualitative/quantitative analyses
    • Expert knowledge of Law.
    • Knowledge of research administration
    • Output and quality orientation.
    • Good presentation skills (for conferences and workshops).
    • Networking skills (national and international).
    • Computer literacy.

    KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to function effectively as part of a team, as well as to work independently.
    • Good verbal communication skills and effective problem-solving and time-management skills.
    • An outstanding work ethic.
    • Client and student oriented.
