    Registered Nurse

    GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    This position is required to

    • Ensure a current plan of care for each resident according tthe current resident needs and documented Policies & Procedures, as well as the updating thereof as the needs of the resident changes.
    • Report changes in residents’ care tthe Nursing Services Manager, as well as documenting in the resident’s file.
    • Ongoing resident assessment, care plan and core evaluation.
    • Manage, order, check and supervise safe medication administration.
    • Ensure strict control of Schedule 5, 6 and 7 drugs.
    • Ensure the physical, social and physiological well-being of residents which includes the regular monitoring of their health and treatment.
    • Perform the required nursing procedures which fall within the scope of a Professional Nurse / Registered Nurse.
    • Assist residents with their physical and mental health.
    • Ensure that there is strict control and documentation is recorded and kept in the event of accidents, incidents and injuries on duty.
    • Ensure that the hygiene of the resident is maintained at highest level.
    • Manage, support, assist and supervise that allocated caregivers deliver the highest standard of care, on a shift-to-shift basis.
    • Assist staff with training and furthering their knowledge within their chosen field.
    • Assist and supervise caregivers with delivery of residents’ clinical care needs.
    • Maintain effective communication with all team leaders.
    • Monitors residents’ daily menu requirements tensure dietary needs and preferences are communicated directly tthe catering staff.
    • Participate in continuing professional development and compulsory education.
    • Ensure that all Nazareth Care non-medical equipment is cared for and take disciplinary action in the event of said equipment being mishandled or broken.
    • Report and record any negligence, abuse or theft tthe Nursing Services Manager.
    • Promote independence and mobility of residents.
    • Counsel and advise residents and family.
    • Maintain the confidentiality of diagnosis, treatment, residents, families, and all matters pertaining tthe Nazareth Care.
    • Be prepared tworkday or night duty depending on the needs of Nazareth Care.
    • Maintain the quality and standard of care given by nursing staff.
    • Ensure continuum of care.
    • Maintain good inter-personal relationships with staff and the clients and residents.
    • Responsible for all medical equipment in the unit – control and optimal maintenance.
    • Responsible for informing the Nursing Services Manager of consumables and drugs required for the unit.
    • Ensuring that the emergency trolley is checked and correct with nexpired items as per Department of Health Regulations.

    PLANNING AND ORGANISATION

    • Supervise and control all subordinates ensuring that the delegation of procedures is within the scope of duties allocated tthe different categories of staff.
    • Ensure that the staff is evaluated monthly on the procedures allocated tthem and that they are able tperform said procedures.
    • Assist with the in-service training of permanent of basic nursing care and management of the aged.
    • Supervise the serving of meals and monitor the residents’ consumption thereof, ensuring that any special dietary needs are met (including, and / or liaising with the dietician and speech therapists).
    • Daily checking of time and attendance and maintenance of time sheets and absenteeism and relief staff.

    ADMINISTRATION

    • Maintain correct residents’ records ensuring that all information is communicated tall staff.
    • Maintain correct administration, recording and storage of medicines and dressing materials.
    • Control all stock, materials, and stationery, ordering on time.
    • Control the time keeping of all staff.
    • Organize relief staff, when necessary.
    • All occasional leave, sick leave and family responsibility leave tbe coordinated with relevant staff member and signed off.
    • Upkeep of the resident register.
    • Management of the admission and discharge register.
    • Control of off duties.
    • Writing of probation reports of all staff.
    • Management of the resident survey.
    • Ensuring all resident information is kept up tdate.
    • Ensure all chronic medication scripts are keep up tdate on a six-monthly basis

    COMMUNICATION

    • Liaise with Nursing Services Manager regarding problems encountered and immediately reporting same.
    • Liaise with medical practitioners keeping them up tdate with specific residents’ problems and treatment.
    • Responsible tkeep the progress reports of residents up tdate.
    • Liaise with relatives, counsel, and advise them, where necessary.
    • Maintain close working relationship with subordinates and counsel where performance levels are deemed inadequate.
    • Responsible tmeet with nursing staff on a monthly basis, reporting back tthe Nursing Services Manager.
    • Dquarterly performance assessments on staff and submit tNursing Services Manager.

    • Professional Care Practices
    • Provides quality resident care, demonstrating dignity and respect for each individual resident
    • Contributes positively tthe House Team and tthe resident care environment
    • Provides competent care / service in accordance with the organization’s documented Policies & Procedures and the legislative requirements relevant tthe role
    • Collaborates documents and shares information with the nursing staff
    • Maintains safe and correct administration of medications according tdocumented Procedures and legislative requirements
    • Maintains knowledge and understanding of current legislative reporting requirements and responsibilities, such as Elderly Abuse, Missing Residents and Compulsory Reporting
    • Establishes and maintains positive relationships with team members

    GENERAL

    • Performs any other tasks as reasonably requested.
    • Monthly in-service training with regard ta mock evacuation procedure.
    • Staff reviews will be conducted quarterly.
    • At ALL times, staff will work within and adhere tthe Core Values as set out by the Sisters of Nazareth.

    COMPETENCIES REQUIRED (MUST HAVE):

    • Excellent leadership, people skills and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability tbe assertive when needed.
    • Fully bilingual.
    • Good English written and verbal communication.
    • Excellent telephone manner with an overall pleasant disposition.
    • Basic Computer literacy.
    • Flexible work style.
    • 5 Years in similar environment

    EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

    • Matric Certificate
    • Diploma in Nursing: General Nursing.
    • Registration with the South African Nursing Council.
    • Proof of professional indemnity.
    • Certificate in Geriatric Nursing optional.
    • Dementia experience
