    Sales Manager

    Main Purpose of the job: Coordinate and manage all sales activities to achieve turnover budget by driving sales and performance.

    Key performance areas:

    Budgets

    • Achieve Turnover budget
    • Drive promotions
    • Ensure 100% in-stock of promotion lines
    • Ensure 100% in-stock of all other lines
    • Correct pricing and ticketing
    • Product knowledge
    • Trade visits
    • Special events
    • In-store promotion activities
    • Deals
    • Achieve Margin

    Control of lower selling prices

    • Deals
    • Markdowns
    • Job lots
    • Damages to stock
    • Incorrect ticketing
    • Discounts
    • Control and manage expenses
    • Personnel costs
    • Productivity
    • Absenteeism
    • Scheduling of contractors and casuals
    • Leave
    • Overtime
    • General Expenses
    • Miscellaneous expenses e.g. stationery, packaging, postage
    • Deliveries

    Merchandising Standards

    • Check stock received
    • Request shelf edge tickets
    • Merchandise stock
    • Place price ticketing
    • Set up displays
    • Set up promotional displays

    Housekeeping

    • Clean shelves and shelf-edge rails
    • Clean aisles
    • Check merchandise
    • Damaged stock removed from shelves

    Stock Management

    • Control Excess Stock
    • Ensure a Smooth Stock-flow from Receiving to the Floor
    • Control of Cage Stock
    • Control of Damages
    • Eliminate Overstocks and/or Understocks

    Shrinkage

    • Ensure adequate coverage of all high shrinkage merchandise
    • Inform Loss Prevention of any unusual activities
    • Take preventative measures
    • Correct pricing
    • Minimize damages
    • Regular stock counts
    • Spot checking of goods received
    • Control on job lots
    • Highlight poor quality merchandise
    • Minimize repairs and returns

    Health & Safety Requirements

    • Ensure that staff adhere to safety regulations, to enable the store to achieve a 5 star NOSA rating
    • Attend regular training
    • Ensure updated hyster/posie licenses
    • Ensure correct stacking of stock
    • Ensure staff wearing protective clothing where required
    • Ensure that no pallets, shelves etc. are lying on the sales floor
    • Safe use of all equipment
    • Ensure that all equipment is well maintained

    Seek new business opportunities

    • Do Trade Visits
    • Get Involved in Exhibitions
    • Initiate Car park Activities
    • Get Involved in New Projects, to Increase Business Opportunities
    • Initiate New Concepts and Products

    Staff Management

    • Ensure that the team structure is resourced by motivated & empowered staff & lead by sound performance management & transformational leadership practices
    • Engage in Talent Management
    • Develop Individual Development Plans to enable employee career plans
    • Manage non-performance through performance process
    • Manage Team Delivery based on performance plans
    • Foster team building
    • Ensure that the training, development and motivation of staff in the region is implemented as well as coach and mentor store managers to ensure that all staff are encouraged to maximize their capability and contribution
    • Ensure optimum staffing levels are maintained

    People Management

    Induction of new employees:

    • Ensure new starters have completed the induction and orientation process within 12 weeks of starting date
    • Line manager to assist HR in induction of staff and facilitate orientation of staff

    Employment equity targets:

    • Ensure achievement of initiatives in support of store equity plan when recruiting for the department
    • Recruitment plan in line with EE
    • Identify EE candidates with potential for development
    • Identify EE candidates for learnership programme

    Performance Management:

    • Signed role clarity in place for each staff member
    • Performance contract in place for all leveled managers
    • Signed PDD’s in place for all staff members
    • Conduct performance and development discussions on a bi – annual basis
    • Maintain appropriate level of discipline
    • Take appropriate disciplinary action
    • Manage staff adherence to working schedule
    • Weekly PDR’s to improve staff morale
    • Ensure staff is cross –skilled to ensure continuity of all functions
    • Energy level improvement
    • Manage time keeping and working hours
    • Effective planning for weekends and festive season trading
    • Manage Team Delivery based on performance plans

    Staff development and succession:

    • Ensure that the % is achieved for training and development plans
    • Ensure that a succession plan is in place for individual departments
    • Ensure Development plan is in place for all individuals
    • Ensure % staff that have completed mandatory CBTs are recorded
    • Ensure % staff that have completed functional CBTs are recorded

    Minimum Academic Requirements, Professional Qualifications, and Experience

    • Matric
    • Have the relevant and recognized tertiary qualification (at Diploma or Degree level) 
    • 3-5 years management experience in similar environment
