    Senior Lecturer & Head Of Department - Horticulture

    Minimum requirements

    • A PhD in Horticulture/ Horticultural Science/ Plant Science or a related field.
    • At least 5 years of teaching experience in the field of horticulture, preferably in ornamental horticulture.
    • Evidence of publication in peerreviewed international journals and conference proceedings.
    • Successful supervision of at least one postgraduate student at the Master’s level.

    Additional recommendation:

    • Uptodate knowledge of emerging trends in sustainable horticulture and landscaping.
    • Evidence of community engagement (including industry) in horticulture.
    • Ability to engage staff, learners, and industry/community partners in collaborative research.
    • Availability to work at other DUT campuses, and in evenings and during weekends, as required.
    • Professional working experience in the horticulture and landscaping industry.

    Summary of duties:

    • Involved in the academic scholarship of research and related outputs; learning, teaching and assessments;external engagement; and leadership, management and administration;
    • Acquire research funding and build a research portfolio within the field of horticulture and plant biology;
    • Supervise students doing research and onand offcampus practical projects;
    • Lecture horticulture and landscaperelated modules or other related modules as deemed necessary;
    • Develop appropriate learning and teaching resources and perform theoretical and practical assessments;
    • Assist in curriculum development and writing of appropriate course material;
    • Participate in external engagement with industry and community stakeholders;
    • Participate in department and university activities including meetings and administrative duties.

    Head of Department summary of duties

    • Dealing with student queries and complaints regarding the Department/Programme.
    • Managing and supervising staff which includes: 
    • The allocation of workload.
    • Approval of leave.
    • Enhancing staff relations and building the team towards a studentcentered department.
    • Attending to matters such as study leave, grievances, disputes, training & development of parttime and replacement staff.
    • Programme and project budgeting.
    • Enhancing Faculty projects e.g. Postgraduate Recruitment and supervision, Siyaphumelela, FYSE, Orientation, and Graduation.
    • To provide leadership to the department in respect of Teaching & Learning and Research.
    • Represent the department in relevant fora.
