    Senior Lecturer/Lecturer (Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment: Department of Urban & Regional Planning)

    Job Description:

    • The University of Johannesburg is actively recruiting for a Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning (DURP) at UJ’s Doornfontein Campus as part of the School of Civil Engineering and the Built Environment (SCEBE) within the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE). As one of South Africa’s 11 accredited planning institutions, DURP is a member of the South African Council for Planners (SACPLAN), Association of African Planning Schools (AAPS), and actively engages with the South African Planning Institute (SAPI). The department is committed to “Driving transdisciplinary planning education and research that sustainably transforms urban and regional planning practice”. The department offers undergraduate and honours programmes in Urban and Regional Planning, Master of Sustainable Urban Planning and Development (MSUPD), Master of Urban and Regional (Research), and PhD (Urban and Regional Planning).  
    • Reporting to the Head of Department (HoD) and collaborating with departmental, internal and external critical stakeholders, the successful candidate will contribute to the department’s academic and research objectives.

    Responsibilities:
    The incumbent will be expected to:  

    • Teach and assess students at degree (undergraduate) and postgraduate levels aligned to the SACPLAN Generic, Core, and Functional Competencies/ disciplines.  
    • Conduct and participate in innovative research activities of the Department/ School/ Faculty and publish in accredited research outputs like journals, conference proceedings, book chapters/books.  
    • Supervise/ Co-Supervise student research projects at degree and postgraduate levels.  
    • Perform departmental administration duties and strategic initiatives independently and in a team environment.  
    • Participate and engage in the community engagement, industry, and professional bodies to enhance teaching and research, and student-centered learning.  
    • Attract research funding to support departmental vision, mission, and goals.
    • Participate in the community engagement activities of the department.

    Minimum requirements

    For Lecturer:

    • Undergraduate and postgraduate degree at masters level (at NQF 9 level) in Urban and Regional Planning or a cognate discipline related to urban and regional planning; registered for PhD/ willing to register (would be an advantage).  
    • Registration with the South African Council for Planners (SACPLAN) or eligibility for registration as a Professional Planner.
    • Proven record of relevant lecturing experience of SACPLAN competencies areas/industry experience.  
    • Evidence of research and publications in accredited publication outputs like journals, conference proceedings, book chapters/ books would be an advantage.  
    • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team player in a dynamic academic/ industry environment.

    For Senior Lecturer:

    • A relevant doctorate (NQF 10 level) in Urban and Regional Planning or cognate disciplines aligned to the urban and regional planning fields.  
    • Undergraduate and postgraduate degree at masters level in Urban and Regional Planning or a cognate discipline related to urban and regional planning.  
    • Registration with the South African Council for Planners (SACPLAN) or eligibility for registration as a Professional Planner.
    • Proven record of relevant lecturing experience of SACPLAN competencies areas/industry experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.  
    • Proven evidence of research and publications in accredited publication outputs like journals, conference proceedings, book chapters/ books.  
    • Proven research supervision experience at postgraduate level.  
    • Practical industry experience and accomplishments.

    Recommendations:
    For Lecturer:

    • Currently enrolled for/or completing a PhD (NQF 10 level) in Urban and Regional Planning or cognate disciplines related to the planning field.  
    • Recent lecturing experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
    • Proven track records in research publications, policy papers, or industry reports.  
    • Strong technical expertise with demonstrated practical experience.
    • Proven research capabilities, research funding and administrative skills.  
    • Experience of supervising student research at degree or postgraduate levels.
    • Proven 3-5 years of relevant experience in the academic/ industry sectors.  
    • Evidence of attracting funding and visibility in academic and industry sectors.  
    • Knowledge of Learning Management Systems (LMS), relevant 4IR tools, softwares, programming. 

    For Senior Lecturer:

    • Recent 5-8 years of relevant lecturing/ industry experience in SACPLAN Competencies/ disciplines relevant to undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
    • Strong technical expertise with demonstrated practical experience.  
    • Proven track record/ evidence of research and publications in reputable, accredited publications like journals, conference proceedings, book chapters and books.  
    • Proven record of teaching and learning excellence and contribution to Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL).  
    • Proven research capabilities and administrative skills in securing research funding, grant management and collaborations.  
    • Proven record of research supervision at postgraduate levels (Masters and doctoral level) to completion.  
    • A National Research Foundation (NRF) Rating, or potential to apply for an NRF rating in 3-5 years.  
    • Recognition/ evidence of discipline-based expertise from academia/ industry.  
    • Evidence of attracting funding and visibility in academic and industry sectors.
    • Knowledge of Learning Management Systems (LMS), relevant 4IR tools, softwares, programming related to planning domain.
