    Senior Lecturer: Medical Ethics and Law

    Senior Lecturer: Medical Ethics and Law (Job Grade 7)
    (Ref. TGB04/170/0720)

    • The Centre for Medical Ethics and Law is responsible for teaching (undergraduate and postgraduate), research and community outreach. It has been in existence for the past 16 years and is a WHO Collaborating Centre in Bioethics.

    Duties    

    Undergraduate teaching:

    • Assisting with undergraduate MBChB teaching and assessments;
    • Serving as secundus in the absence of the chair of Ethics Modules. 

    Postgraduate teaching:

    • Assisting with the new PhD (Clinical and Research Ethics) programme, including communication with students and supervisors;
    • Providing co-supervision and guidance to students as required;
    • Arranging external examiners and organising oral examinations;
    • Developing online courses in medical ethics and medical law for various audiences;
    • Presenting CPD talks as required;
    • Assisting with GCP training.

    Research:

    • Assisting with current research projects in the Centre, including WHO-related projects;
    • Searching for new funding opportunities in bioethics and assisting with applications for new funding opportunities;
    • Writing and submitting articles for publication;
    • Reviewing articles for international and national bioethics journals on request;
    • Undertaking independent research in bioethics;
    • Assisting with the development and teaching of online courses in research ethics;
    • Assisting with the organisation of the annual research ethics seminar/other conferences. 

    Community interaction:

    • Serving on the Clinical Ethics Committee (CEC) of Tygerberg Hospital;
    • Responding to queries received via the Ethics Hotmail and Ethics Hotline in the Centre;
    • Assisting with the annual bioethics seminar and conferences hosted by the Centre;
    • Serving on the EXCO of REASA (Research Ethics Association of Southern Africa).

    Job Requirements    

    • A Master's degree in bioethics/medical ethics/medical law, OR a Master's in any discipline with a Bachelor's qualification in health sciences plus  postgraduate training in bioethics, as well as experience in teaching medical ethics and/or medical law, including online teaching;
    • In the absence of a Bachelor's degree in health sciences, the candidate will be required to have at least three years' experience teaching bioethics  in a health sciences environment;
    • Proven research experience in the form of publications, within the context of bioethics/medical law;
    • Fluency in English (writing, reading and speaking);
    • Experience in postgraduate supervision of students.

    Recommendation    

    • PhD (with a focus on bioethics);
    • Experience working in a clinical health environment;
    • A history of successful funding applications;
    • Ability to analyse qualitative research data using NVIVO/Atlas.
