Short Description / Purpose of Job

• Leads and coordinates scoping, conceptual and techno-economic studies and basic engineering for projects utilising internal as well as external resources.
• Develops, finalizes scope for techno-economic studies by Consultants and engineering companies and direct front end loading activities to ensure engineering works are carried out in accordance with the plans and within agreed schedule and cost.
• Develops and updates Natref long term development plans and capital budget, liaises with various licensors to evaluate new technologies, catalyst and chemicals to improve plant configurations, reduce operating cost, improve plant flexibility and enhance product qualities as required by shareholders.
• Represents Natref in studies or projects carried out by other Sasol business units to discuss and coordinate integration, interface and synergy issues between various regional operating hubs and ensures Natref requirements are met.
• Support Senior Manager Projects in interaction with internal and external parties ensuring needs and intent from Business / Operations and advice/recommendations from engineering studies are appropriately included in final investment decision of projects. Assist with the development of engineering deliverables, estimates, board applications and related documentation and providing feedback at the Technical and Development and Steering committee meetings.
• Serve as central point of accountability and communication on project preparation topics of a dedicated portfolio to VP Technical & Projects.

Recruitment Description / Key Accountabilities

Feasibility Studies

• Liaise with business, operations and other stakeholders to facilitate the development of ideas into viable options.
• Prepares and finalizes scope for feasibility studies to be carried out by engineering companies.
• Participates in technical, commercial and contractual negotiations.
• Ensures data and design basis provided for these studies are valid and consistent.
• Works closely with consultants and follows up their work during various stages of feasibility studies.
• Ensures work is carried out in accordance with the scope and are within schedule and cost.
• Prepares presentation of study results to Management and shareholder representatives for approval.

Technical Proposals from Technology Providers, Licensors, Catalyst Suppliers and other Entities

• Reviews such proposals, holds meeting with vendors; coordinates participation of concerned Departments.
• Provides advice on suitability, adaptability and path forward for technical proposals.
• Defines areas for de-bottlenecking, upgrading, modernizing and expanding existing facilities or adding new facilities for current and future investment plans.

Licensor and Technology Selection for New Projects

• Reviews and evaluates Licensors and technology selection criteria.
• Evaluates Licensors for process technology, most suitable catalyst and finalize process guarantees and reporting

Statement of Requirement Development

• Prepares and finalizes scope of Consultant, liaises with projects team on project design basis, optimisation studies and company engineering design specification requirements.

Front End Engineering Design for New Projects

• Accountable for preparation (until gate 3) of assigned projects on budget and on time in line with the Sasol Business Development & Implementation stage gate model.
• Provide the necessary support during the basic development phase of projects (until gate 4)
• Provides necessary support to project delivery team in reviewing and endorsing project design basis and engineering documents and ensure proper handover for projects passing Final Investment Decision (FID) into execution.
• Ensure compliance with management of change procedures where required
• Ensure effective implementation of systems and procedures including project screening for new studies / projects to effectively manage the portfolio.

• Train and develop the assigned staff on relevant skills to enable them to become proficient on the job and deliver the respective section objectives.

Budgets

• Provide input for preparation of the Section budgets and assist in the implementation of the approved Budget and work plans to deliver Section objectives.
• Investigate and highlight any significant variances to support effective performance and cost control.

• Implement approved Section policies, processes, systems, standards and procedures in order to support execution of the Section’s work programs in line with Company and International standards.

• Contribute to the achievement of the approved Performance Objectives for the Section in line with the Company performance framework

People Management

• Managing a team of internal and external engineers and supporting resources to ensure that study / project objectives are being met

Formal Education

• 4 years' Degree in Chemical Engineering

Min Experience

• 10 to 12 years relevant experience

Certification & Professional Membership

• ECSA or IChemE Registration (Preferred)
