    Senior Risk Manager

    Job Purpose

    • Implement and maintain the risk management framework to provide assurance to the business that the risk function is correctly monitoring and, where appropriate, mitigating risk.
    • Act as primary contact for first line business risk management teams.
    • Communicate monitoring to IGMSA Board, IGMSA Exco, Senior Management and Committees.
    • Understand the internal risk and control landscape and ensure that all key risks are identified, assessed, and managed through appropriate, effective controls.
    • Identify areas of weakness and control failures and instigate process improvements to strengthen control and risk mitigation.
    • Understand current and emerging threats, the potential effect and impact of identified risks, and provide advice on how to mitigate that risk.

    Role Responsibilities

    • Perform ‘2nd Line of Defence’ activities to monitor and report to Senior Management on risk KRIs both in South Africa and globally. To include market risk, credit risk, operational risk and technology risk. This reporting will be used in various committees and board meetings.
    • Oversee periodic risk reviews and “deep dive” risk assessments e.g. margin reviews, market risk limit reviews etc.
    • Develop and maintain risk management framework documentation, methodologies and independent assurance activities.
    • Provide oversight and effective challenge over risks relating to business operations to influence senior management decision-making.
    • Support, advise and partner with the ‘1st Line of Defence’ stakeholders to implement risk management tools, processes and methodologies to help identify, manage and monitor risks and ensure they are used effectively.
    • Drive improvements in risk culture across business functions and business stakeholders.
    • Share and promote risk management best practices and consistency in approaches across the business.
    • Provide risk management training and education to all levels of employees and promote the use of operational risk management tools across the 1st line.
    • Develop and maintain risk registers as appropriate.
    • Identify new areas of risk to monitor and implement solutions.
    • Identify processes to be improved/automated and work with the Risk Analytics team to achieve this.

    Ability / Expertise

    Essential

    • Three to Five Years’ risk management experience and knowledge of risk frameworks and methodologies working for a regulated financial institution in South Africa.
    • A graduate qualification in risk, finance, commerce, business management or a related qualification to satisfy the expertise of risk responsibilities.
    • Performing risk assessments and identifying risks by applying business or industry knowledge. 
    • Knowledge of risk frameworks and standards (ISO22301).
    • Communicating effectively to build and maintain transparent relationships with stakeholders (including Senior Management).
    • Clearly expressing ideas and concepts both verbally and in writing to effectively handle sensitive issues. 
    • Critical thinking with strong attention to detail and follow up. 
    • Technically competent to contribute towards the preparation and implementation of control processes, procedures and guidelines, in conjunction with company policies. 
    • Leading, planning and conducting workshops to perform risk assessments and gain an understanding of the area being reviewed. 
    • Documenting processes and key controls, highlighting risks and issues as well as suggesting improvements to match business processes and rules, reducing cost where possible. 
    • KPI and audit finding tracking, compiling and reporting with a proven ability to understand and process and interpret analytical data. 
    • Supporting engagements with internal and external audit, to ensure their success.
