SHEQ - Health and Safety Officer at Phakisa Group

Job Purpose

• We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented SHEQ – Health and Safety Officer to ensure compliance with occupational health, safety, environmental, and quality requirements within an FMCG manufacturing environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing and maintaining SHEQ systems, conducting inspections and audits, identifying risks, and ensuring a safe working environment for all employees and contractors.

Key Responsibilities

• Implement, maintain, and monitor SHEQ policies, procedures, and standards.
• Ensure compliance with applicable Occupational Health and Safety legislation and company requirements.
• Conduct regular workplace inspections, safety audits, and risk assessments.
• Identify hazards and ensure appropriate corrective and preventative actions are implemented.
• Investigate incidents, accidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions and compile relevant reports.
• Maintain accurate SHEQ records, registers, checklists, and documentation.
• Monitor compliance with safe working procedures and work instructions.
• Conduct SHEQ inductions, toolbox talks, and safety awareness training.
• Assist with emergency preparedness, drills, and response procedures.
• Ensure appropriate PPE is available, used correctly, and maintained.
• Monitor contractor and visitor compliance with site safety requirements.
• Participate in safety meetings and provide SHEQ reports and recommendations to management.
• Assist with environmental and waste-management requirements relevant to the FMCG operation.
• Support internal and external audits and ensure findings are addressed.
• Promote a positive safety culture throughout the organisation.
• Ensure housekeeping, hygiene, and workplace safety standards are maintained.
• Monitor corrective actions and follow up on outstanding SHEQ issues.
• Liaise with employees, supervisors, management, and relevant external stakeholders regarding SHEQ matters.

Minimum Requirements

• Grade 12 / Matric.
• Relevant SHEQ, Occupational Health and Safety, or Safety Management qualification.
• Relevant Health and Safety certification, such as SAMTRAC, NOSA, or equivalent, would be advantageous.
• Valid First Aid and Fire Fighting certification would be advantageous.
• At least 2–3 years' experience in a Health and Safety/SHEQ role.
• Experience within FMCG, manufacturing, production, or a similar industrial environment is preferred.
• Good knowledge of South African Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
• Experience conducting risk assessments, inspections, audits, and incident investigations.
• Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office.

Salary

R20,000 – R30,000 per month, depending on experience.
