    Tailings Department – Intermediate Tailings Engineer

    Vacancy Details

    Jones & Wagener is seeking to employ an intermediate level self-motivated tailings engineer with 4 to 7 years of tailings related experience, in the tailings department, based in our Rivonia or Centurion offices on a full-time basis. The engineer would contribute to new and existing projects and assist senior engineers and project managers with surveillance of existing and design of new tailings storage facilities and return water dams.

    Preference to candidates with the following skills and attributes:

    • Good critical thinking and problem-solving skills
    • Good communication skills, fluent in English
    • Dynamic, self-motivated, takes responsibility and ownership of tasks
    • Able to manage time effectively
    • Attention to detail
    • Strong mentoring skills.
    • Strong organisational and planning skills.
    • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment.

     The requirements associated with the position are as follows:

    • 4 to 7 years of tailings engineering experience
    • B Eng or BSc Eng in Civil Engineering
    • Professional registration with ECSA is advantageous
    • Good fundamental understanding and knowledge of soil mechanics
    • Post graduate experience in geotechnical engineering will be advantageous
    • Experience in CPTu testing and interpretation
    • Experience in geotechnical investigations considered advantageous
    • Experience in related laboratory testing of soils and tailings material considered advantageous
    • Candidate should be proficient in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook and MS PowerPoint
    • Candidate should have experience with slope stability, seepage analysis and FEM software, such as Geostudio.
    • Candidate should be proficient in AutoCad Civil 3D or ModelMaker
    • Valid driver’s license and passport

     The main duties associated with the position include the following:

    • Previous on-site quality assurance experience.
    • Strong negotiation skills.
    • Proficiency in MS Project (or other scheduling software) will be considered advantageous.
    • Project controls experience will be considered advantageous.
    • Dynamic, self-motivated, takes responsibility and ownership of tasks.
    • Solid organization, time-management skills, and attention to detail.
    • Works independently.
    • Good communication skills.
    • Good critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

    The main duties associated with the position include the following:

    • Assisting with planning and scheduling of projects
    • Assisting with the compilation of proposals and appointment of sub-contractors and sub-consultants
    • Surveillance of tailings storage facilities and return water dams
    • Assisting the Engineer of Record (EoR) in carrying out annual audit inspections on tailings storage facilities and return water dams
    • Travel to site, predominantly South Africa, Tanzania and West Africa, to conduct site inspections related to monitoring and construction management
    • Design of new tailings storage facilities, return water dams or associated infrastructure, together with travelling to site to conduct field investigations relevant to the project
    • Stability analysis of various facilities and types of residue
    • Transfer of knowledge and delegating work to a team of graduate and junior engineers
    • Should be able to manage various tasks of a project and report back to senior engineers and project managers
    • Keep up with latest developments in the tailings industry and improve knowledge base
