    Teacher Trainer

    Role Purpose

    To plan, develop, deliver and review high-quality face-to-face Teaching Reading for Meaning teacher training workshops to English as a first additional language (EFAL) teachers at Primary level. Workshops will ensure teacher satisfaction and equip teachers to apply workshop content in their classrooms and support the wider aims of the British Council in South Africa.

    Main accountabilities:

    Programme Delivery

    • Plan, prepare and deliver high quality teacher training that meets the needs of different primary level English as an additional language teachers.
    • Develop and/or use appropriate assessment methods to gather information on participants' knowledge and skills, before, during and after training.
    • Build excellent relationships with teachers and programme participants to engage them in the learning experience and encourage them to adopt the methodology in their own teaching practice.
    • Demonstrate expertise and confidence in the subject matter to enhance the credibility of the British Council’s English Programmes offer.
    • Use the British Council’s methodology to create a learner-centred, interactive experience for programme participants.
    • Relate all learning to participants’ classroom or other relevant contexts, such real-life links to ensure they are able to apply the techniques in their own teaching practice.
    • Give useful constructive feedback on participants’ performance.

    Other duties

    • Attend a 3–5-day orientation and training session (in a central location) to gain an understanding of the training materials towards the end of February 2024.
    • Complete the requisite administration tasks for each training session (attendance, etc.)
    • Write a comprehensive report after each training session according to a template provided which will feed into monitoring and evaluation of the project.

    Minimum requirements:

    Education:

    • Degree or demonstrable equivalent qualification (Education and/or English Language preferred)
    • Postgraduate qualification in Education and/or ELT desirable.

    Professional Qualification and Certification:

    • Appropriate teaching qualification (PGCE, Cambridge CELTA [DELTA preferred] or other British Council recognised TEFL/TESOL qualification, etc).
       

    Role specific knowledge and experience:

    • Relevant work experience in ELT, with a proven track record of delivering language skills development sessions with an understanding of teaching reading,
    • Relevant experience in continued professional development for teachers,
    • Relevant experience in delivering training to adults.

    Desirable

    • Experience in delivering in-service and /or preservice teacher training in ELT,
    • Previous work experience in the education sector.
