    Technical Director Structural Engineering

    Role Introduction

    The successful incumbent will lead a structural team consisting of structural engineers, technologists, technicians, and modeller’s. The primary focus will be on contributing to building the Built Environment unit in Gauteng, by utilizing your existing network in the South African public and private sector, with clients and network partners, to win and deliver new work.

     

    Role Responsibilities

    • Contribute to the strategic repositioning of the built environment unit as part of operating a profitable business in Gauteng.

    • Win new work by leading all aspects of bids, leveraging relationships with public and private clients, and consulting partners.

    • Lead project execution in respect of technical delivery, pricing, resource balancing, change management, budget control and maintenance of as-bid margins.

    •  Technical approval of designs, assessments, and calculations in accordance with quality procedures.

    • Communicate verbally and in-writing with clients via meetings, reports, and virtual platforms in the interests of project progress and by resolving conflict as it arises. 

    • Review projects performance through governance mechanisms and lead the team to “course correct” as projects issues arise. 

    • Develop staff with a particular focus on developing a layer of middle management, mentorship of junior engineers toward registration, and growing the digital skill set of staff to industry-leading standards.

     

    Minimum Requirements

    • Bachelors degree in Structural Engineering with a Pr.Eng registration and further CPD

    • development in your technical field.

    • Appropriate post-graduate CPD in general management and leadership or the management of projects in a consulting environment.

    • Additional industry affiliations or similar.

    • Minimum of 15 years’ structural experience within the Built Environment industry.

    • Must have at least 5 years leading a team of 10 or more staff in your own practice or a business unit in a larger firm.

    • An accomplished technical Team Leader with the ability to support, mentor and develop less experienced engineers.

    • Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.

     

    Skills and Characteristics

    • Your project leadership experience would have been spent working for key public clients (such as parastatals, municipalities or provincial offices) or blue chip clients and private sector (such as commercial developers or industrial manufacturing clients).

    • A solid understanding of, and capability to apply commercial management principles on Built

    • Environment projects that demonstrates effective management of changes, project margins and human resource balancing.

    • Strong operations management skills.

    • An understanding of the current trends in the fields of digital engineering and the ability to lead the continuous development of such skills at Zutari’s Built Environment Gauteng unit.

    • A strong industry profile that demonstrates entrepreneurship, the ability to build a business (or unit) and ability to leverage a professional network for the growth of Zutari.
