    Technician / Senior Technician - Faculty of Engineering Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

    Duties        

    • Manufacturing and debugging of systems and subsystems for research projects (e.g., electrical, electronic and PCB circuits);
    • Providing advice and guidance regarding electronic and/or mechanical design to colleagues and students;
    • Maintaining and repairing machinery and equipment;
    • Providing technical and logistical support to students with practicals and project work;
    • Undertaking occasional project-related local travel.
    • For the Senior Technician, the following additional duties:
    • Designing, or assisting in designing, systems and subsystems for research projects;
    • Assisting with managing the workshop;
    • Supervising / mentoring technical staff.

    Job Requirements    

    Technician:

    • National Certificate in Electronic or Mechatronic Engineering (NQF level 5 or equivalent), or higher;
    • At least three years' technical experience in support of a technical qualification.

    Senior Technician:

    • National Diploma in Electronic or Mechatronic Engineering (NQF level 6 or equivalent), or higher;
    • At least seven years' technical experience in support of a technical qualification;
    • At least two years' experience in taking responsibility for the execution of projects.
    • The ability and willingness to learn new skills and to undergo further training;
    • The ability to interpret mechanical drawings for the manufacturing of parts or sections of instruments;
    • The ability to work independently and in a group setting;
    • Good general computer skills (e.g., MS Office);
    • Experience with interpreting electronic circuits and manufacturing electronic systems;
    • Experience with electronic-related Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software (e.g., Altium, KiCAD);
    • Good communication skills;
    • The ability to handle physically demanding work;
    • Effective planning, prioritising and time management skills;
    • Experience in a manufacturing workshop environment;
    • A valid driver's licence.
