    Tug Driver (JHB)

    Description

    • Conduct aircraft pushback and towing operations in strict accordance with approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and airside regulations;
    • Ensure correct positioning of aircraft during gate departures, arrivals, and maintenance movements;
    • Maintain continuous communication with flight deck crew, marshallers, and ground staff during all aircraft movements;
    • Apply correct hand signals, headset communication, and emergency procedures as required; 
    • Adhere to all airside safety rules, including speed limits, FOO control, and apron markings;
    • Perform pre-use inspections of tugs, tow bars, and related equipment, reporting defects immediately;
    • Comply with SACAA, airport authority, and airline safety requirements;
    • Identify and report hazards, incidents, or near misses in line with the organisation's Safety Management System (SMS);
    • Safely and responsibly operate aircraft tugs and other ground support vehicles to move aircraft without damage;
    • Maintain cleanliness and basic care of assigned vehicles and towing equipment;
    • Complete required documentation relating to equipment checks, incidents, and operational activities;
    • Support ramp and ground operations during peak periods and irregular operations;
    • Assist with aircraft repositioning for maintenance, training, or operational requirements;
    • Work collaboratively with ground handling teams to ensure efficient turnaround times;
    • Advanced knowledge of aircraft towing, pushback, and ground handling operations;
    • Strong understanding of aircraft weight, balance, and safe manoeuvring principles;
    • Expert use and inspection of aircraft tugs and ground support equipment;
    • Sound knowledge of airside operations, airport layouts, and safety regulations;
    • Proficient communication and coordination within the airport operating environment. 

    Requirements

    • Grade 12 or Equivalent (Essential);
    • 10 years experience in airside, ramp, or ground handling operations (Essential);
    • Exposure to aircraft towing, pushback, or ground support operations within an airport or apron environment (Essential);
    • Exposure to aircraft ground movements and apron operations (Essential);
    • Willingness to work shifts, weekends and on public holidays;
    • PDP License (Essential);
    • Tug License AAFSA (Essential);
    • Previous ASCA Permit (Essential);
    • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written);
    • Good hand-eye coordination;
    • Interpersonal skills;
    • Attention to detail;
    • Ability to work under pressure and within strict timeframes.
