    Utilities: Artisan

    Job Description    

    • Technical knowledge of utility equipment (boilers, air compressors, chillers, pumps, HVAC, water systems)
    • Preventative and corrective maintenance execution
    • Equipment fault-finding and root cause analysis
    • Adherence to statutory and safety requirements
    • Equipment inspections and condition monitoring
    • Energy and water efficiency support
    • Job card completion and use of Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
    • Participation in plant shutdowns and project support

    Key Duties & Responsibilities    
    Maintenance Execution

    • Perform planned preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance on all utility systems and equipment.
    • Carry out repairs and replace worn or faulty components in a safe and timely manner.
    • Support the Team Leader: Utilities in planning and executing shutdown activities.

    Equipment Reliability and Troubleshooting

    • Diagnose and resolve faults or failures on boilers, compressors, pumps, and other utilities systems.
    • Participate in root cause analysis (RCA) and corrective actions to reduce repeat failures.
    • Monitor asset condition and recommend improvements for reliability and efficiency.

    Compliance and Safety

    • Ensure that all maintenance work is conducted in line with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, Pressure Equipment Regulations (PER), and internal safety procedures.
    • Support legal inspections, testing, and audits of utility equipment.
    • Complete and maintain safe work procedures and risk assessments.

    Documentation and CMMS Use

    • Accurately complete job cards and update CMMS (e.g., SAP PM) for all maintenance activities.
    • Record findings, spare part usage, downtime, and time spent on tasks.
    • Maintain equipment history and assist in maintaining statutory documentation.

    Operational Support

    • Provide standby support as required to respond to after-hours equipment failures.
    • Liaise with Utilities Operators and Production to coordinate repairs and minimize impact.
    • Support continuous improvement initiatives for utilities efficiency and plant uptime.

    KBI

    • Utility equipment uptime and availability
    • % Preventative Maintenance schedule compliance
    • Mean Time to Repair (MTTR) and Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF)
    • First-Time Fix Rate
    • Zero safety incidents or deviations from permit procedures
    • Audit compliance (e.g., Engineering, Safety, Environmental)
    • Utilities-related downtime incidents

    Skills, Experience & Education    

    Education

    • Minimum: N4–N6 in Mechanical, Electrical, or Electro-Mechanical Engineering
    • Required Certification: Trade Test Certificate (e.g., Fitter, Millwright, Electrician, Refrigeration Mechanic)
    • Boiler and/or pressure equipment training/certification (advantageous)

    Experience

    • Minimum 3 years of experience as a qualified artisan in a manufacturing or utilities environment
    • Demonstrated experience with utility systems including boilers, compressed air, chilled water, and water treatment
    • FMCG, beverage, or food industry experience preferred
    • Working knowledge of CMMS systems

    Skills

    • Sound mechanical or electrical fault-finding skills
    • Knowledge of pump systems, valves, actuators, instrumentation, and basic PLC interfaces
    • Understanding of pressure vessels, safety devices, and compliance inspections
    • Familiarity with thermodynamics and refrigeration principles (if applicable)
    • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics
    • Computer literacy (MS Office, maintenance software)
    • Strong adherence to health and safety protocols
