    Utilities Operator: CO2 Plant

    Job Description    

    • Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA) has an exciting opportunity. We are looking for a talented individual with relevant skills and experience for a Utilities Operator: CO2 Plant, which is based in Elgin. 

    Functional Capabilities:

    • Operation of CO2 generation, purification, and compression equipment
    • Monitoring of CO2 plant performance and product quality
    • Adherence to safety, food safety, and environmental compliance standards
    • Routine plant inspections and first-line maintenance
    • CO2 product quality testing and basic troubleshooting
    • Gas storage and transfer operations
    • Plant logkeeping and reporting
    • Emergency response for CO2 systems

    Key Duties & Responsibilities    
    Key Outcomes:

    CO2 Plant Operations

    • Operate the CO2 generation and purification systems in accordance with standard operating procedures.
    • Maintain CO2 production parameters (flow, purity, pressure, temperature) within target ranges.
    • Manage storage tanks, pressure vessels, and transfer lines for continuous CO2 availability.

    Monitoring and Control

    • Perform regular rounds and equipment checks to identify leaks, irregularities, or deviations.
    • Record key operational parameters and report abnormal conditions or alarms to the Team Leader.
    • Ensure gas detectors and safety systems are functional and routinely tested.

    Quality and Compliance

    • Collect and test CO2 samples to ensure compliance with food-grade standards.
    • Ensure product meets Coca-Cola Company quality specifications for CO2 used in beverages.
    • Maintain documentation for quality checks, safety tests, and environmental controls.

    Maintenance Support and Housekeeping

    • Conduct first-line maintenance, cleaning, and basic repairs of CO2 plant equipment.
    • Support artisans and contractors during breakdowns, overhauls, or statutory inspections.
    • Maintain housekeeping in the plant to GMP and safety standards.

    Safety and Environmental Stewardship

    • Operate within the requirements of the OHS Act and environmental regulations.
    • Monitor CO2 emissions and pressure levels in accordance with permits and standards.
    • Participate in risk assessments, toolbox talks, and incident reporting.

    KBI:

    • CO2 plant uptime and availability
    • CO2 purity and quality compliance rate
    • Zero safety incidents or gas leaks
    • Uninterrupted supply to production lines
    • Compliance with internal and external audits
    • Planned maintenance adherence (%)Reduction in CO2 waste and losses

    Skills, Experience & Education    
    Education

    • Minimum: Grade 12 with Mathematics and Physical Science
    • Preferred: N3–N6 in Mechanical, Chemical, or Process Engineering
    • CO2 plant or gas operations training (advantageous)
    • Relevant operator certifications (advantageous)

    Experience

    • 2–3 years’ experience in utilities or process plant operation (preferably in FMCG, food, or beverage)
    • Experience with industrial gas systems, especially CO2 or other cryogenic/gaseous processes
    • Knowledge of pressure vessels, compressors, gas detectors, and food safety environments

    Skills

    • Operation of CO2 generation, compression, and storage systems
    • Understanding of gas properties, pressures, flow, and purity monitoring
    • Basic knowledge of instrumentation, control valves, and compressors
    • Gas safety and handling procedures
    • Equipment logkeeping and basic report writing
    • Familiarity with food safety (FSSC, ISO 22000) and safety (OHS Act) systems
    • Basic troubleshooting and fault finding
    • Computer literacy (MS Office, plant SCADA/HMI systems)
