Ventilation Officer at Sibanye-Stillwater

Job Purpose:

• Responsible for the maintenance of the overall ventilation, refrigeration and occupational hygiene system for operations, projects and joint ventures as applicable and to provide the immediate supervisor with information to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.

Minimum Required Qualification:

• NQF 4 (National Senior Certificate / Grade 12 or equivalent)
• Underground operations: Intermediate certificate in MEC.
• Experience: Minimum 3 years’ experience as a C lower

The Appointee should:

• Medically fit to work in the specific business area.
• Clear security screening record.
• Valid driver’s license (if applicable)

Key Responsibilities:

• Legal & Governance Ensure that legal requirements, group standards and policies are adhered to by:  Achieving legal compliance  Interpretation of legal requirements.  Ensures adherence to legal compliance through monitoring and reporting.  Measure compliance to the Environmental Engineering and Occupational Hygiene Regulations of the Mine Health and Safety Act pertaining to monitoring and reporting at operational level.  Responsible to ensure that policies, programmes, standards, codes of practice and procedures are maintained in accordance with legal and Group requirements.  Scheduling and conducting of occupational hygiene measurements for compliance to Section 12 of the Mine Health and Safety Act.  Compile occupational hygiene and ventilation risk assessments for compliance to Section 11 of the Mine Health and Safety Act.  Establish a system to understand and mitigate occupational hazards in terms of the Section 12 of the Mine Health and safety Act.  Assist in the implementation and maintenance of emergency preparedness programmes in compliance to Chapter 16 of the Mine Health and Safety Act.  Assist in the implementation and maintenance of fire prevention programmes in compliance to Chapter 5 of the Mine Health and Safety Act.
• Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene strategies Contribute to the achievement of the objectives and targets of the Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene Department and those of the business area by  Participating and supporting the development and acceptance of business plans and strategies.  Ensure continuous improvement of the ventilation and occupational hygiene programmes and systems by means of integration, optimisation and maintenance of such systems.  Maintain ventilation and occupational hygiene strategies and systems by  Assist in the development of best practices, standards and procedures.  Assist in ventilation and occupational hygiene planning, technical systems, and administration.  Provide solutions to specific Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene matters (known or identified via trend analysis).  Sets daily, weekly and monthly ventilation and occupational hygiene targets.  Provide ventilation, refrigeration and occupational hygiene technical expertise to the operations.  Ensure that the area of responsibility within the specific section can maintain or improve on their current systems in line with the strategic plans and resource constraints.  Ventilation reviews to ensure appropriate working conditions at the operations.  Determining the need for plans and plan revisions.
• Compliance measurements Compliance measurements  Scheduling and conducting of occupational hygiene measurements for compliance to Section 12 of the Mine Health and Safety Act.  Compile occupational hygiene and ventilation risk assessments for compliance to Section 11 of the Mine Health and Safety Act.  Establish a system to understand and mitigate occupational hazards in terms of the Section 12 of the Mine Health and safety Act.  Statutory plans are in place and up to date (Ventilation plans and mine rescue plans).  Assist in the implementation and maintenance of emergency preparedness programmes in compliance to Chapter 16 of the Mine Health and Safety Act.  Assist in the implementation and maintenance of Emergency preparedness programmes.  Assist in the implementation and maintenance of fire prevention programmes in compliance to Chapter 5 of the Mine Health and Safety Act.  Measure compliance to the Environmental Engineering and Occupational Hygiene Regulations of the Mine Health and Safety Act pertaining to monitoring and reporting at Business Area level.  Ensure and assure legal compliance as well as a safe and healthy work environment, to ensure minimized pure risk, litigation exposure and adverse publicity.  Ensuring adherence to all ventilation and company policies, procedures and standards.  Conducting Ventilation and Occupational hygiene projects, surveys, research and audits.  Advising on ventilation and occupational hygiene problems.  Advising on changes to plans, schedules, procedures and standards to minimise the effect of unexpected or unsafe work practices.  Interpreting and act on ventilation and occupational hygiene related legislation.  Participate in mining Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene technology studies.
• Reporting Legal:  Ensure compliance to legal reporting requirements for ventilation and occupational hygiene (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annually).  Meet time deadlines pertaining to reporting (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annually)  Updating, recording and reporting of occupational related exposure histories.  Statistical analyses of ventilation and occupational hygiene data per workplace or section of the business area. Operational:  Provide information on ventilation and occupational hygiene matters related to a specific workplace or section of the operation.  Advice on changes to plans, schedules, procedures and standards to minimize the effect of unexpected or unsafe work practices.  Report and advise on ventilation and occupational hygiene findings and trends.  Advises on changes to plans, schedules, procedures and standards to minimize the effect of unexpected or unsafe work practices.
• Administration  Provide information and advice related to ventilation and occupational hygiene.  Advise on changes to plans, schedules, procedures and standards to minimise the effect of unexpected or unsafe work practices.  Ensure adherence to legal compliance in terms of required reports.
• Stakeholder Relations  Building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders across the organisation and externally at all levels and cross-functionally.  Ensuring open communication channels with all relevant stakeholders.  Sourcing, contracting and negotiating with service providers.  Liaising with the necessary entities on any ventilation or occupational hygiene related requirements.  Collaborating with external service providers regarding the design and implementation of tools to enhance processes. Financial Management Working Cost Budgets:  Manage budgeting parameters for the ventilation and occupational hygiene departments in line with business requirements and financial objectives.  Assist in formulating monthly and annual budgets. Cost Savings:  Lead and drive cost saving and cash conservation initiatives. This support will manifest in the targeted shift in culture as described by a valid culture assessment. SHE Compliance  Assist with the implementation and maintenance of ventilation and occupational hygiene systems which contribute to a safe and productive work environment.  Comply with SHE standards within the work environment.  Participate in risk assessments and investigate and take appropriate action as per identified risks.  Ensure adherence to all company policies and procedures.
