    Veterinarian

    • We wish to appoint a Part-time Attending Veterinarian who will form an integral part of the WRAF team in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand.
    • The ideal candidate, who must be registered with the South African Veterinary Council, will be responsible for providing veterinary and research support within the Facility. The position would suit a self-motivated individual with good surgical, clinical and supervisory skills, as well as a passion for research.

    Brief Description        
    Key responsibilities include the following:

    • Monitoring and promoting animal well-being during animal use and at all stages of the animal’s life;
    • Responsibility for providing the highest standards of care and ethics in animal use;
    • Developing collaborative relationships with researchers and members of the WRAF team;
    • Providing surgical research support;
    • Attending and contributing through the review of protocols;
    • Establishing species-specific health and disease surveillance programmes;
    • Training and educational responsibilities; and
    • Performing self-initiated research.

    Requirements

    • Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree or equivalent;
    • At least 1 year of experience as a practising veterinarian;
    • Registration with the South African Veterinary Council;
    • Proficiency in English;
    • Excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills;
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; and
    • Basic computer skills.

    Advantages

    • Experience in working with lab animal or exotic species
    • Experience with surgical techniques in animal
