    Director: Clinical Research Centre (CRC)

    Requirements:

    Eligible to be a SAHPRA approved principal investigator on clinical trials by virtue of the following:

    • Is a South African permanent resident or citizen
    • Has participated in at least 2 clinical trials to completion as sub-investigator
    • Is registered with the HPCSA as clinician with up-to-date SA GCP training
    • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in the clinical research environment (that includes either industry or investigator initiated clinical trials)
    • Experience with and sound knowledge of clinical trial protocol development and design
    • Experience of clinical research team management
    • Experience of Clinical Trial Research Financing
    • Proven academic and research stature, with commensurate publication track record.

    Advantageous:

    • Prior experience as a Principal Investigator on clinical trials
    • Experience working at a strategic level with senior management in a university and /or research facility.
    • Business management qualification
    • Knowledge and experience of university systems and practices
    • Sound knowledge of the higher education/academic sector research environment

    Short listed candidates who meet the requirements may be invited for interviews and probed for some of the following additional attributes:

    • Sound knowledge of the South African clinical trial regulatory environment
    • Evidence of solid teamwork and interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate well with clients, employees, and senior management and external stakeholders.
    • Evidence of strong business planning, analytical and conceptual skills
    • Exceptional team management skills, including the ability to effectively deploy resources and manage multiple projects of diverse scope
    • Ability to develop new system approaches to solve problems and seize opportunities for sustaining business success

    • Knowledge of principles and current trends in clinical trial ethics both nationally and internationally
    • Knowledge of national and international health research funding environment

    Responsibilities:

    • Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, GCP and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), you will work with diverse clinical research teams and the Deputy Dean for Research to help ensure projects are delivered within budget and on time.

    Key roles/responsibilities include in equal measures:

    • Managing strategic clinical research-related initiatives, especially with a view to improved research governance, financing, risk mitigation and sustainability in clinical research across the Faculty
    • Conducting, promoting and providing strategic advice on clinical research for FHS and UCT’s Research Office
    • Promoting clinical research in Health Sciences to external stakeholders & developing partnerships
    • Ensuring a sustainable competitive Clinical Research Facility.
    • Soliciting, scoping and applying for Clinical research funding opportunities

    Other responsibilities related to these key roles would include:

    • Appropriate management of confidential information
    • Line management of staff

    Senior Lecturer / Assoc Prof / Professor

    • Develop and publish research as well as attract research funding
    • Teach graduate-level core and elective courses to students with a variety of professional backgrounds
    • Supervise Master’s and PhD students

    Successful candidates will have:

    • A completed doctoral degree
    • Demonstrated excellence (or clear potential for excellence) as a teacher, particularly in highly interactive classroom settings
    • A track record of publications and success in obtaining research funding (especially for more senior positions)
    • Fluency in oral and written English

    We prefer candidates with:

    • International exposure (academic or professional)
    • Industry experience and/or degrees from or previous experience at a business school

    Director: Faculty Operations: Faculty of Health Sciences

    Requirements:

    • A relevant qualification at an NQF 9 level qualification or related professional equivalent.
    • 15 years of progressive experience at senior management level within an organisation of similar complexity, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
    • Experience engaging at a senior board/governance level.
    • Evidence of strategic leadership, staff management and organizational change.
    • Proven track record in optimising and integrating finance, new business development, human resources, operations, facilities management, and Information and Communication Technology Services (ICTS). 
    • Knowledge of health and safety policies and protocols.
    • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead people through business and organisational transformation and integration, whilst being able to manage a complex array of internal and external stakeholder relationships. 
    • An astute individual who is driven, flexible and determined, with a proven history of successful relationship building to deliver on strategic goals. 
    • Well-reasoned decision-making ability and outstanding skills in verbal and written communication, persuasive negotiation and extensive experience working with staff at all levels. 
    • Demonstrated experience in values-based leadership and the ability to operate confidently and sensitively with respect to issues of diversity, transformation and equity. 

    The following would be advantageous:

    • Broad exposure to financial and commercial operations.
    • Demonstrated evidence of financial acumen at a senior level.
    • At least 5 years’ experience in higher education and/or the health sector would be an advantage.

    Responsibilities:

    • Strategic and effective leadership in the planning, management and oversight of the Faculty resources through a sustainable integrated operation that is in line with the Faculty’s vision and long-term goals.
    • Executive oversight (in close collaboration with other portfolios within the Faculty) of the cluster of activities related to all operational functions, including ICTS, Operations and Support Services, Business Development, Finance, Human Resources and special projects.
    • Identification and development of new income initiatives in support of the Faculty strategy.
    • Accountability for non-research contracts management extent and compliance.
    • Maintain and update a Faculty risk management strategy and risk register that is aligned to the University Risk Management Framework.
    • The ability to effect transformation in the cluster of activities related to all operational functions.
    • Strategic management of physical infrastructure across the Faculty – Strategic design framework.

    Program Manager (Bioinformatics & Genomics)

    Requirements:

    • Masters degree in Bioinformatics, Genomics or a related scientific domain or Postgraduate qualification in project management with evidence of exposure to Bioinformatics and/or Genomics
    • 3 years of working experience in the bioinformatics/genomics field with demonstrated project management experience or 3 years working experience in project management with demonstrated exposure to bioinformatics/genomics
    • Evidence of organizational, administrative and time management skills

    Senior Lecturer (PG Convenor)

    Requirements include:

    • Registered with HPCSA as a Specialist General Surgeon
    • At least 1 year’s post-qualification experience in academic General Surgery
    • Demonstrable teaching experience at postgraduate level
    • Demonstrable research supervision experience at master’s level
    • Excellent written communication skills

    Clinical Educator: Clinical Skills: HSE

    Requirements:

    • MBChB OR BCur Or BCMP (Clinical Associate) qualification.
    • At least three (3) years' experience working with adult patients in a clinical DIAGNOSTIC capacity and environment.
    • Experience teaching/tutoring undergraduate medical students within an academic, clinical, and/or Higher Education environment.
    • Registration with appropriate regulatory body.
    • Critical knowledge on entry to post: clinical diagnostic reasoning related to common core conditions found in SA (South Africa), the relevant signs, and symptoms as well as understanding of the relevant basic sciences, e.g., applied anatomy, physiology, pathology related to common core conditions.
    • Critical skills on entry to post: experience with common procedures such as phlebotomy, lumbar puncture, basic life support, etc.

    Advantageous:

    • Skills/experience in PBL; skills/experience in simulation pedagogy; experience with construction of multiple-choice question and OSCE assessment tools

    Completed or in-process qualification in one of the following:

    • PG Diploma in Health Sciences Education
    • MPhil in Health Sciences Education
    • MPhil in Higher Education with research relevant to Health Sciences Education

    Responsibilities:

    • Teach and support the development of clinical reasoning and clinical skills to medical students, utilizing a range of modalities including lectures, small-group tutorials, bedside learning, case presentations and simulation-based activities with manikins and simulated patients.
    • Prepare, coordinate, and participate in assessment activities, including OSCE and multiple-choice exams, and participate in quality assurance processes.
    • Assist with the development and provision of simulation-based undergraduate training curricula.
    • Participate in departmental research projects and educational scholarly activities.
