    Intern: Camera Operator - JHB North

    Filming

    • Under the guidance of the producer and senior cameraman, assists with and learns to plan and develop the visual presentation of inserts, gradually building skill in creative and technical filming techniques.
    • Learns to set up optimal lighting and to record sound of excellent quality, under supervision.
    • Films sequences in continuity for editing purposes and ingests and labels all footage.
    • Maintains the assigned ENG kit in good condition and a state of readiness at all times.
    • Accompanies and assists senior cameramen on doorstop and undercover assignments, learning to capture clear audio and visuals while protecting the identity of anonymous sources.
    • Is willing to travel and to be away from home for shoots as required, accompanying the production team.
    • Learns to film anchor links to an excellent audio and visual standard and is punctual at all times.

    Video Editing

    • Learns to edit raw footage into broadcast-ready content, under supervision, incorporating appropriate transitions, audio, graphics and colour correction where required.
    • Works towards producing broadcast-ready edits within agreed timelines.

    Communication and Teamwork

    • Is a team player with good interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Maintains a good working relationship with the cameramen and editors assigned to each story.
    • Works effectively under pressure and problem-solves, especially when under pressure.

    Intern: Media Archivist

    Media Preparation

    • Clearing the previous day’s rundown templates for each bulletin aired by deleting video links, so that there is adequate space in the system
    • Gathering aired clean packages, all live feeds, raw footage and cutting interviews from all bulletins recorded as per the archives SOP and the Archives selection policy
    • Overseeing content ingest from multiple sources and confirming technical quality standards to ensure compliance with broadcasting standards and formats.

    Media Archiving

    • Applying accurate metadata to all archived materials to support efficient retrieval.
    • Ensuring data security and redundancy through appropriate backups.
    • Catalogue, log, and classify all incoming footage and broadcast material using the applicable system.
    • Maintaining digital and physical archives, ensuring the integrity and security of all media assets.

    Media Maintenance

    • Maintaining and regularly update metadata to ensure search accuracy.
    • Identifying and reporting workflow or system issues promptly.
    • Monitoring access rights and restrictions for internal and external content.

    Client Liaison

    • Conducting online research to support selection of relevant footage for compilations.
    • Fulfilling internal and external content requests accurately and timeously, including request to all echannels (primarily News and Current Affairs), production houses.

    Reporting

    • Logging and escalating any system or content-related issues as they arise.
    • Compiling daily handover reports at the end of each shift with updates and task status.

    Requirements

    Qualifications

    • National Senior Certificate - Essential
    • National Diploma in Library and Information Studies/Archival Studies and Media Studies - Essential
    • Bachelors Degree  in Library and Information Studies/Information Science/Knowledge and Media Studies - Recommended

    Intern: Producer

    Editorial

    • Assist in identifying newsworthy issues, events, and developments, and pitch unique story ideas to the editorial team.
    • Learn to build, update, and maintain a strong professional contact base.
    • Assist in newsgathering and investigative efforts, shadow senior producers to learn how to cultivate sources and secure interviews.
    • Conduct thorough, in-depth background research and preliminary investigations to prepare for story angles and interviews.
    • Assist in drafting balanced, probing interview questions and learn techniques to hold subjects accountable.
    • Learn to use visuals effectively to write balanced, accurate, unbiased, and captivating scripts under editorial guidance.
    • Observe and assist in the supervision of the filming and editing process to work towards producing strong, original inserts.

    Requirements

    Qualifications

    • National Diploma in Journalism/ Media Studies/ Communications/ International Relations/ Politics is essential
    • Bachelors Degree in Journalism/ Media Studies/ Communications/ International Relations/ Politics is recommended
