    Social Science Research Assistant (Somkhele)

    Overview of duties

    • Recruit study participants
    • Conduct informed consent process with participants
    • Schedule, prepare and conduct in-depth interviews and focus group discussions
    • Record in-depth interviews and focus group discussions.
    • Reimburse participants.
    • Compile field notes and case summaries.
    • Maintain accurate data collection records.
    • Transcribe and translate in-depth interviews and focus group discussions.
    • Attend training and debriefing sessions.
    • Participate in development of coding framework, in thematic coding of data and in preparation of thematic summaries.
    • Facilitate and/participate in Public Engagement activities.

    Requirements

    • An undergraduate degree in the field of Social Science
    • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in qualitative data collection with emphasis on mixed methods
    • Excellent proficiency in English and isiZulu (verbal and written)
    • A valid Driver’s License

    Minimum experience

    • At least 3 years’ experience in qualitative data collection using various methods including observations, focus group discussion or in-depth interviews.

    Advantageous

    • Previous experience working at AHRI.
    • Experience in clinical trials will be an added advantage.

    Research Officer - Durban

    Overview of duties

    • Conduct a range of desk and literature reviews on topics related to adolescent mental health to inform the AHRI Adolescent Mental Health Strategy.
    • Coordinate communication, including regular meetings, between stakeholders in the strategy development processes.
    • Conduct and take minutes during, and synthesise learnings from, key stakeholder interviews and engagements.
    • Support the Mental Health Lead to develop the Adolescent Mental Health programme of work at AHRI.
    • Support the Mental Health Lead to prepare scientific outputs including conference presentations and scientific papers for peer reviewed journals.

    Requirements

    1. Honours qualification in any field (social sciences preferred, Masters preferred).
    2. Evidence of high-quality writing.

    Minimum experience

    1. 2 years’ experience in a research environment, research assistantship, project management or research coordination role.
    2. Experience and good understanding of evidence synthesis (scoping reviews, systematic reviews, desk research) and qualitative research.
    3. Experience of engaging with a range of stakeholders (government, community, academic).
    4. Evidence of being able to write for an academic and non-academic audience.

    HDSS Data Collection Training (Somkhele)

    Description

    • Africa Health Research Institute’s (AHRI) vision is the optimal health and well-being of under-resourced populations. To achieve this, AHRI undertakes transdisciplinary academic research to understand and intervene in the health and well-being of under-resourced South African communities. AHRI conducts world-class research in HIV, TB, and non-communicable diseases, spanning basic, clinical, social, and population sciences.
    • We are seeking highly motivated and outstanding individuals to be trained as HDSS data collectors (fieldworker, tracker and/or call centre agent). The responsible person will be responsible for performing telephonic and field-based data collection tasks from households and individuals in the Demographic Surveillance Area (DSA) using a set of data collection instruments.
    • Data collection happens in regular rounds and organised in sequential week blocks. Data will be collected through electronic based, involving recording of responses and/or collection of bio measures (such as height, weight, BP, etc.) and biomarkers such as blood specimens, including testing for HIV serostatus.
    • As for Telephonic data collection will be on an electronic platform, requiring a Call Agent to have a good voice projection, and very skilled in fast-paced electronic capturing of data from telephonic interviews. The training programme will be based at our Somkhele site.

    Requirements

    • Senior Certificate
    • Certificate in Surveillance Data Collection
    • A 10-day HIV/AIDS Counselling Certificate from registered service provider
    • HIV Rapid Testing Certificate
    • Good Clinical Practise or Good Practice in Health Research Certificate/s will be an advantage.
    • Drivers Licence as an added advantage

    Minimum experience

    • Experience in conducting home-based rapid HIV test services.
    • Experience in a field-based and/or telephonic data collection.
    • Experience in data capturing.
    • Must be computer literate.
    • Must be a resident and a member of a homestead from within the Demographic Surveillance Area (DSA).
    • Fluency in IsiZulu.
