    2786 Lecturer: Civil Engineering

    Main tasks

    Minimum Qualification Knowledge and/or Experience

    • A relevant Bachelor’s degree (BEng, BScEng, BEngTech Hons, or equivalent) at NQF Level 8 in Civil Engineering.
    • Registration as a PrEng or PrTechEng (Civil Engineering) with ECSA.
    • Evidence of progress towards a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering.
    • At least three years’ teaching/industry experience in the relevant subject field(s).

    OR

    • A relevant Master’s degree (MEng, MScEng, MTech, or equivalent) at NQF Level 9 in Civil Engineering.
    • Registration as a Candidate Engineer/Engineering Technologist supported by proof that an application for PrEng/PrTechEng (Civil Engineering) registration with ECSA was submitted and is currently under final review.
    • At least two years’ teaching/industry experience in the relevant subject field(s).

    Demonstrated knowledge, proficiency, application, and practical experience of Geotechnical Eng., including:

    • Site investigations, soil and rock logging, foundation design, slope stability, retaining structures, and soil improvement techniques at well-defined, broadly-defined, and complex levels.
    • Environmental assessments related to geotechnical engineering and soil conditions.
    • Design, construction, and management of foundations, embankments, earthworks, retaining walls, and soil stabilisation in civil engineering projects.
    • Software applications related to geotechnical engineering, e.g., GEO5 Suite, PLAXIS, Slide, gINT, DeepEX, and similar tools for the analyses, design, and reporting.

    Design codes/legislation/international technical standards:

    • SANS 10400-H, G & B (Foundations, excavations & structural design).
    • SANS 10161 (Design of foundations for buildings).
    • SANS 2001-CM2 (Construction works for various foundation types).
    • SANS 633 (Soil profiling & rotary percussion borehole logging on dolomite land).
    • SANS 634 (Geotechnical investigations for township development).
    • SANS 1936-1 to 4 (Development of dolomite land).
    • SANS 207/SANS 8006 (Earthworks & reinforced fill structures).
    • SANS 10160-5 (Basis of structural design & actions for geotechnical design).
    • SABS 1200F (Piling).
    • SAICE (Geotechnical Division: Site investigation code of practice).
    • SAICE/SAIEG/AEG (Guidelines for soil and rock logging in South Africa).
    • SANRAL (Standard specifications for subsurface investigations).
    • NHBRC (Building design codes).
    • ISSMGE Technical Standards (TC98 SC06 Geotechnical design & TC212 Deep foundations)

    AND/OR

    Demonstrated knowledge, proficiency, application, and practical experience of Transportation Eng., including:

    • Transportation engineering, transportation planning, traffic engineering and modelling, and pavement design at well-defined, broadly-defined, and complex levels.
    • Environmental assessments related to transportation engineering.
    • Design, construction, and management of pavements in road related projects.
    • Software applications related to transportation engineering, e.g., Rubicon Toolbox, AutoDesk (AutoCAD & Civil-3D), Civil Designer, PVT Visum, and/or TransCAD.
    • Design codes: SANS1200 A-N (Civil Eng. Works), SAPEM CH10 (Pavement Design), TG2-2020 (Bitumen Stabilised Materials), COTO Standard and Specifications 2020 (Road and Bridge Works), TRH26 (South African Road Classification and Access Management Manual), TMH16 (Traffic Impact and Site Traffic Assessments), TRH4 (Structural Design of Flexible Pavements for Interurban and Rural Roads), TRH14 (Classification System for Granular Materials, Gravels, and Soils in South Africa), TRH17 (Geometric Design of Rural Roads), and the UTG (Urban Transport Guidelines) Series.

    Desired Qualification, Knowledge and/or Experience

    • Master’s degree at NQF Level 9 in Civil Engineering plus PrEng/PrTechEng (Civil Eng.) registration with ECSA if in possession of an NQF 8 qualification.
    • Evidence of progress towards a Doctorate degree in Civil Engineering if in possession of a Master’s degree.
    • Evidence of work experience in the subject field(s) covering all phases of the project life cycle.
    • Evidence of experience in research and associated outputs.
    • Community engagement services in the profession, e.g., consultancies and professional activities.

    • CAD drawings inclusive of sectional views and structural element sections, elevation drawings, plan layouts, reinforced concrete detailing and structural steelwork, bending schedules, orthographic and isometric projections, framework analyses, architectural drawings, contour plans and mapping, and earthworks and mass-haul diagrams.
    • CAD drawings for civil engineering infrastructure, e.g., buildings, roads, and water, stormwater, and sewer reticulation systems.
    • General civil design principles and the integration/incorporation thereof in engineering drawings.
    • Software applications related to engineering drawings, e.g., AutoDesk (AutoCAD, Civil-3D & Infraworks), ArcGIS, QGIS, and SketchUp.
    • A strong working knowledge of AutoDesk (AutoCAD 2D drafting and 3D modelling), e.g., ability to create and edit engineering plans, sections and detail drawings, and setting up layers, blocks, title blocks, and standard templates.
    • A strong working knowledge of AutoDesk (Civil-3D), e.g., proficiency in surface modelling and terrain analyses, corridor modelling for roads and highways, intersection design, road alignments, pipe networks for water, stormwater and sewer systems, profiles, and assemblies and quantity take-offs.

    Desired Qualification, Knowledge and/or Experience 

    • Master’s degree at NQF Level 9 in Civil Engineering plus PrEng/PrTechEng (Civil Eng.) registration with ECSA if in possession of an NQF 8 qualification.

    • AutoDesk Certification or equivalent credential.

    1132 Associate Professor/Professor: Government Management

    Main tasks

    Minimum Qualification/ Knowledge and/or Experience

    To be appointed as Associate Professor:

    • A relevant SAQA-approved Doctoral-level degree (i.e. D Tech Public Management and Administration / PhD Public Management and Administration / NQF 10 or equivalent).
    • Six (6) years teaching/lecturing experience in the relevant subject field.
    • Evidence of research output, postgraduate supervision and presentations at national and international conferences in line with CUT’s promotion requirements, which requires:
    • 3.0 credit units at Senior Lecturer level or 4.5 cumulative credit units (books, chapters in books, articles in accredited journals, papers published in peer-reviewed conference proceedings, patents, etc.)
    • Three completed master’s degrees as a main supervisor; OR two completed doctorates (as main supervisor) at Senior Lecturer level OR four completed master’s degrees OR three cumulative completed doctorates (as main supervisor) OR at least one completed master’s degrees (as main supervisor) and at least 9.0 cumulative credit units.
    • Ten cumulative presentations/papers at conferences, of which at least three cumulative presentations/posters at an international conference.
    • Lead/manage at least one research project.

    Minimum Qualification/Knowledge &Experience          

    To be appointed as a Professor:

    • A relevant SAQA-approved Doctoral-level degree (i.e. D Tech Public Management and Administration / PhD Public Management and Administration / NQF 10 or equivalent)
    • Eight (8) years’ teaching/lecturing/experience in the relevant subject field.
    • Evidence of advancing knowledge through research output, postgraduate supervision and presentations at national and international conferences in line with CUT’s promotion requirements, which requires:
    • 4.5 credit units at Associate Professor level or 9.0 cumulative credit units (books, chapters in books, articles in accredited journals, papers published in peer-reviewed conference proceedings, patents, etc.)
    • Two completed master’s degrees and two completed doctorates (as main supervisor or promoter) at Associate Professor level OR Six completed master’s degrees and five cumulative completed doctorates (as main supervisor or promoter) OR At least one completed master’s degree (as main supervisor) and one completed doctorate (as main supervisor) and at least 18.0 cumulative credit units
    • Nineteen cumulative presentations/papers at conferences, of which at least six cumulative presentations/posters at an international conference
    • Lead/manage an externally funded research project
    • Involvement as an editor/reviewer/external examiner) 

    Desired Qualification, Knowledge And/Or Experience

    • Peer reviewed publication track record in the field of specialisation (h-index or i10-index).
    • Visible engagement in a relevant research community.
    • Evidence of the acquisition of research grants from local and international sources.
    • In possession of a teaching qualification in higher education.
    • In possession of a National Research Foundation Rating (NRF rating is an added advantage).
    • Evidence of the ability to lecture at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
    • Evidence of interaction/engagement with professional community and the society.
    • Evidence of work experience in multicultural environments is an asset.
    • Evidence of relevant industry experience is an asset.
