Role Title: Senior Electrical Designer

Reports To: Lead Electrical Engineer / Engineering Manager

1.Summary

• The incumbent is an experienced Electrical Designer, with experience obtained in an industrial electrical and multi-disciplinary engineering project environment (detailed engineering phases) in the mining / minerals processing / oil & gas / power / infrastructure sectors. The incumbent is responsible for the production of electrical designs, 3D models and 2D drawings in accordance with project requirements under the supervision of the Lead Electrical Designer/Engineer.
• The incumbent has fulfilled similar design roles involving designs of electrical facilities and systems which range from Medium Voltage (MV) primary distribution and reticulation systems, consumer switch yards and switchgear, large motor power circuits, through to Motor Control Centers (MCCs), lighting & small power, earthing and lightning protection.
• The incumbent will be part of a multi-disciplinary project team in a large EPC/M project environment.
• The success of the role is directly related to the ability of the incumbent to produce accurate designs in a time-effective manner to meet project schedule objectives.The Electrical Designer may also be involved in construction and commissioning related activities. The role may require time spent at the client’s operational and construction sites, imposing the requirement for travel and time spent away from the home office.

2.Key Responsibilities

• Adhere to and promote the Hatch Safety in Design corporate culture
• Produce and maintain technical and engineering drawings using 2D/3D CAD software as required
• Produce designs and drawings for electrical systems, i.e. MCC schematic diagrams, protection block diagrams, cable schedules, single line drawings, power distribution layouts, general arrangement drawings and grounding/earthing designs
• Perform lighting designs using lighting design software as required
• Produce cable tray/rack routing and designs and 3D models
• Apply industry best practices and the requirements of IEC/IEEE/or local codes/standards as applicable to the respective project in executing electrical design work
• Check drawings prior to release
• Ensure coordination with designers and engineers of other disciplines
• Perform clash detection of 3D models and coordinate electrical design with other discipline models
• In conjunction with electrical engineering staff, produce detailed engineering drawings and documentation for identified and approved concepts/projects
• Participation in formal engineering review processes
• Verify on-site conditions and dimensions relating to existing facilities
• Perform as-built redlining of drawings, and make updates in accordance with the redlines

3. Qualifications and Experience

Esssential

• Electrical engineering diploma from a recognized college
• Professional engineering technician registration with the local governing engineering council or institution
  Minimum of five years electrical design experience with some site experience in walk-downs, field measurements and commissioning
• Worked in a multi-disciplinary environment on large projects in the mining, mineral processing, oil & gas, power, infrastructure sectors and/or heavy industrial projects
• Extensive use of 2D design and 3D modelling software platforms (tools)
• Knowledge of industry or regulatory standards, regulations and codes pertinent to the design and systems related to the project
• A high degree of understanding of interdisciplinary dependencies related to the discipline
• Proficient in the use of Auto CAD, MicroStation and Bentley software suite
• Development and upholding of design and modelling object libraries
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• Good safety awareness
• Attention to detail.

Preferred

• Lighting design software tools
• Working knowledge of automated wiring design tools (SPEL, ElecDES, COMOS, etc.)
• Good understanding of the BIM approach to design work relating to electrical equipment definitions and direct material take-offs (MTOs) from a 3D model and 2D design tool
• Good understanding of PFDs and P&IDs
• Equipment factory acceptance testing and inspections
• Plant and facility construction supervision and commissioning
• Control and instrumentation design
• Experience in the use of procedures and workflows in the execution of projects.

As The Successful Candidate, You Will

• Develop a thorough understanding of the project requirements as they relate to scope, schedule and cost
• Assist in the preparation and development of project specific procedures
• Define the electrical system requirements to achieve the project results and monitor effectiveness
• Prepare a list of engineering deliverables and time-based functions to facilitate the planning and control of the engineering budget
• Develop the electrical work plan for insertion into the project specific execution plan
• Develop and maintain the project scope of work documentation and revisions as required during the design evolution
• Manage and review the Engineering Work Packages (EWP) associated with all deliverables and time-based functions to ensure that budgets and schedules are being met, and take corrective action if necessary
• Assign work tasks (via approved engineering work packages) to individuals and continuously monitor progress and quality
• Review and approve the electrical engineering and design standards
• Review and approve electrical technical deliverables (design criteria, calculations, study reports, specifications, datasheets, drawings, etc.), and provide professional sign-off where required
• Ensure coordination, between the electrical team and other disciplines, of all activities being performed as the design evolves
• Ensure that quality audits of engineering work are carried out in accordance with project procedures and the quality assurance plan
• Ensure that all work designed, manufactured and supplied in the electrical engineering discipline complies with the relevant sections of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
• Participation in the compilation of the client Project Safety Management Plan with specific reference to switching, isolation and lockout procedures
• Prepare engineering bid documentation and perform technical evaluation and recommendation of bids
• Monitor the fabrication and construction work to ensure that it is executed in accordance with the engineering designs. Witness Factory / Site Acceptance Tests.

You Bring To The Role

• BSc/B Eng or B Tech Degree in Electrical Engineering and a Professional Registration with an approved engineering council or other region equivalent, a post-graduate qualification in Electrical Engineering,
• Minimum 10 to 15 years’ relevant experience
• Experience working in a multi-disciplinary environment on large projects in the mining, mineral processing, oil & gas, power, infrastructure sectors and/or heavy industrial projects
• Engineering and design experience in HV primary distribution and reticulation systems, consumer switch yards and switchgear, transformers, large motor power circuits and Low Voltage (LV) electrical distribution systems, MCCs, lighting & small power, earthing and lightning protection.
• Extensive use of electrical design software platforms (tools) for power system modeling and studies, protection coordination schemes, earthing (grounding) studies, etc. e.g. ETAP, DigSilent, CDEGS, EasyPower, SKM
• Sound understanding of regulations, design codes and technical standards
• Technical exposure to the latest equipment and power systems technologies
• A high degree of understanding of interdisciplinary dependencies related to the discipline
• Extensive experience in the use of procedures and workflows in the execution of projects
• Good understanding of procurement, contracting and commissioning methodologies
• Ability to manage individuals to attain quality, cost and schedule objectives
• Experience in mentoring young professionals
• Experience in engineering and designs on underground mining projects
• Electrical designs for hazardous / flammable environments, and associated equipment selection
• Experience in energy management systems for metals/mining/process clients to optimize energy usage and generation
• Experience in transmission line designs
