    Post-Doctoral Study (42275)

    Job Description

    • South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI) a division of the South African Sugar Association (SASA) has a 12-month opportunity available for a Post-Doctoral Study based in Mount Edgecombe, KwaZulu-Natal.

    The opportunity

    • A post-doctoral position is available in the Crop Biology Resource Centre at the South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI). This position is funded by SASRI for an initial period of one year, which may be renewable for a further year. The position is available from 1 June 2025. The position is open to South African residents.
    • The project focuses oninvestigating and developing new approaches for point of care (PoC) diagnostics using Loop Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) technology to detect a bacterial pathogen of sugarcane, Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli.This technology is known for its high sensitivity, specificity and tolerance to inhibiting-substances. Point-of-care LAMP platforms designed with the principles of microfluidic chip technology, including LAMP-on-a-chip, paper-based LAMP, and smartphone-based LAMP applications have been reported. The aim of the project will be to translate laboratory-based LAMP to an in-field detection platform for rapid, user friendly detection of L. xyli subsp. xyli. 

    The candidate

    • The preferred incumbent must have a strong skill set in molecular biology techniques
    • The incumbent will also be required to be involved in general laboratory operations and the training and supervision of postgraduate students
    • Candidates should possess strong communication skills, good time management, teamwork, and problem-solving skills
    • Independent thinking, record keeping and use of online and electronic platforms to store, document and manage data, experiments and samples will also be required

    Minimum Requirements

    • A PhD in Plant Pathology or related discipline, obtained within the last five years
    • Recent peer-reviewed publications in accredited journals
    • Demonstrable experience with molecular cell biology techniques (e.g.) RT-qPCR, Next Generation Sequencing, ELISA or cell-based assays

    IT Executive (42605)

    Job Description

    • The Information Office Executive will guide and manage the overall provision of Information Technology (IT) services, policies, and programs across the company. The successful candidate will have general oversight of IT infrastructure, including provisioning, planning, integration, installation, and operation. This role involves researching and planning the implementation of relevant technologies, while ensuring the smooth operation of system hardware, software, and procedures that align with the company's values and goals. The Information Office Executive will also lead the Information Office team and report directly to Executive and Senior management on IT matters, providing updates on various projects

    Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

    • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems or equivalent
    • MBA or equivalent postgraduate qualification (preferred)
    • A minimum of 5 years of relevant technical experience and Information Office management experience at a Senior Management level
    • Proven people management and team leadership experience
    • Valid Driver's License (Code 08)
    • Experience in project management

    Key Responsibilities:
    Governance & Leadership:

    • Provide overall governance of the Information Office within the company
    • Lead, manage, and mentor a team of Information Office professionals

    Infrastructure & Security:

    • Plan, implement, and monitor changes to infrastructure configurations
    • Develop and maintain system standards and ensure system monitoring for security purposes

    Technology & Service Enhancement:

    • Work with the Information Office department to enhance current technologies and improve service delivery
    • Communicate regularly with executive management to keep them informed about information technology progress and challenges

    Team Management & Development:

    • Oversee the recruitment, training, development, performance management, and guidance of Information Office staff
    • Provide support for performance management, rewards, and disciplinary actions

    Project & Vendor Management:

    • Manage Information Office projects, ensuring timely delivery and budget adherence
    • Manage relationships with hardware and software vendors

    Financial Management:

    • Manage the budget and financial aspects of the Information Office

    Compliance & Best Practices:

    • Ensure compliance with legal requirements for Information Office operations and provide advice to management on necessary actions
    • Develop security standards, procedures, and guidelines for various Information Office platforms

    Communication & Strategy:

    • Develop best practices and written documentation for the Information Office
    • Provide IT advice, guidance, and strategic direction to management

    Key Skills & Attributes:

    • Strong leadership and team management skills
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with senior management and teams
    • Strong technical knowledge of IT infrastructure, security, and systems
    • Ability to manage complex IT projects and vendor relationships
