    Sessional Medical Specialist - Reconstructive and Plastic Surgery

    Requirements :

    • Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in Plastic Surgery. Registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in a normal specialty. Current registration with HPCSA for 2025/2026. For Grade1: 0-5 years’ experience as Medical Specialist.
    • For Grade 2: 5-10 years’ experience as Medical Specialist.
    • For Grade 3: 10 years and above as Medical Specialist.

    Competence/Knowledge/Skills:

    • Good leadership skills, excellent communication (verbal and written), ability to resolve conflict and good interpersonal skills. The successful candidate must be adaptable, disciplined, and self-confident. The candidate must be able to work independently and under pressure, they must be aware the need may arise to work beyond normal working hours and work with a diverse team. Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team is a must.

    Duties :

    • Provision of a comprehensive clinical service for patients at Helen Joseph Tertiary Hospital; provision of undergraduate and postgraduate medical student teaching; provision of supervision and training of registrars, medical officers, interns and nurses.
    • An ability to initiate and conduct research will be an advantage.
    • Appointed candidate will be expected to strengthen the regional and district health systems by providing outreach programmes; to participate in all divisional, departmental and faculty meetings in order to facilitate effective teaching and research as well as to enhance continuing professional development; to maintain quality assurance standards and other departmental policies.
    • Attend meetings and training as approved by HOU. Comply with the Performance Management and Development System (PMDS) (contracting, mid-year reviews and final assessment).

    Head Of Unit (This Is a Re-Advertisement – Those Who Applied Before Are Encouraged To Re-Apply)

    Requirements :

    • Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist: Anaesthesia. Registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in Anaesthesia and proof of current registration.
    • A minimum of 3 years appropriate experience in Anaesthesia post registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist.
    • A post specialist qualification will be an advantage. Experience in administration, management, finance, research and special interest or expertise in a branch of the specialty is desirable.
    • A minimum of 2 peer reviewed publications will be an advantage (senior lecturer).
    • A sound knowledge of government regulations, policies and acts.
    • The ability to interpret and implement policies. Teambuilding, people and interpersonal relations skills.
    • Communication skills (verbal and written), organizational, problem-solving and interventional skills. Highly motivated and enthusiastic to contribute to anaesthesiology care and services. The ability to work under pressure, lead transformational change in a complex environment and the ability to manage change in the department.

    Duties :

    • Manage and run a clinical unit in the Anaesthesiology Department at Helen Joseph Tertiary Hospital. Perform clinical duties in areas of personal special interest and expertise.
    • Ensure that clinical services are provided.
    • Active participation in administrative duties of the department which include planning, budgeting,
    • PMDS, student assessments. Comply with the Performance and Development System (Contracting, quarterly reviews and final assessments).
    • To collaborate and assist the HOD of Anaesthesiology at Wits and the Cluster Hospitals whenever needed, in service delivery, teaching and training as an outreach programme. Ensure that appropriate, ethical and quality research is performed in the department as part of a wider agenda to explore improvements in health care in the Gauteng Province and South Africa as a whole with publication of the results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
    • As part of the University’s responsibility, sufficient and quality teaching must be provided to undergraduates (medical students) and postgraduates (Registrars).
    • Teach students in areas of personal special interest and expertise. Participate in the Anaesthesiology examinations of the College of Medicine South Africa.
    • Ensure the employment of the previously disadvantaged individuals in terms of race, gender and disability to enhance equity.
    • Perform commuted overtime as per departmental requirement. Contribute to departmental planning, budgeting and procurement processes as well as monitoring and evaluation.

    Medical Specialist

    Requirements :

    • Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the HPCSA as a Specialist in anaesthesia. Registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in anaesthesia and proof of current registration. No experience required after registration with the HPCSA as specialist anaesthetist.

    Duties :

    • Ensure effective and efficient anaesthesiology service delivery. Co-ordinate and supervise clinical care and treatment. Provide administrative support to the Head of the Unit. Provide guidance on issues pertaining to academic development of registrars and medical officers. Interact with the hospital’s nursing and administrative departments to ensure efficient running of the institution’s operating theatres. Uphold the teaching, research and service values of the University of Witwatersrand Department of Anaesthesiology. Assessment and development of junior staff.

    Medical Technical Grade 1 Or 2

    Requirements :

    • A Certificate in Medical Technician that allows the registration with the HPCSA as Medical Technician in the category Histopathology Technique.
    • Experience in Forensic or Anatomical Histopathology laboratory:
    • Grade 1 no experience post qualification.
    • Grade 2 five (5) years’ experience post qualification.
    • Current registration with the HPCSA. Computer literacy (MS word, Excel, Power point, and Outlook).
    • Ability and willingness to work within groups and be involved in team activities.
    • Good Communication skills (Written and Verbal) Interpersonal Skills. Self-motivated. Ability to work under pressure.
    • Valid driver's license (Optional).

    Duties :

    • Receive samples as per standard operating procedures; log relevant data whilst maintaining chain of custody.
    • Perform sample Analysis e.g. Put through, Processing; Embedding; Microtomy, frozen sections and Staining including Special Stains. Maintain laboratory equipment.
    • Ensure all quality assurance procedures are maintained to ensure production of valid results.
    • Make up all relevant reagents perform stock maintenance.
    • Be involved in document control and student training.
    • Perform filing. Archival and retrieval of sample material and documents.
    • Observe Health and Safety Regulations.
