The Role
Our team is at the forefront of using big/social data and data science models to answer market research briefs faster, more objectively and predicatively.
As Junior Insights Consultant, you will primarily work on market research projects answering client briefs on consumer attitudes and behaviours. Applying both quantitative and qualitative research techniques to our social datasets to analyse data, identify trends, understand consumers’ interests and present the findings. You will be responsible for supporting our Insights Consultants and Directors with these tasks across a large range of client projects. Black Swan works with a world class & rapidly growing array of clients including PepsiCo, Colgate, Danone, Diageo, Twitter and J&J, giving you exposure to world class marketers, strategists and insight professionals.
This is an opportunity to work across some really interesting client issues and expand your knowledge of how social research and data science can be used to replace traditional research approaches. You will get to experience a unique research approach which allows us to gain a truer understanding of consumers. Expect to engage in a creative research process where analytical rigour is almost equally important as curiosity about the world. You will be part of an engaging, fast-paced environment, working with a dynamic and social team.
Key Accountabilities:
The day to day duties of an Insights Associate are as follows:
Taxonomy builds
Expanding inclusion and exclusion terms from our master taxonomy around topics such as ingredients, product, brands and themes.
Data curation and outputting
Using Black Swan’s proprietary tools to curate datasets and run data outputs for analysis.
Analysis
Conducting both data-led and qualitative analysis.
Ability to work with and interpret large volumes of Excel data.
Report writing
Succinct reporting of both data-led and qualitative analysis, identifying compelling insights that answer key business questions.
Project delivery
Actively participating in client and internal meetings, debriefs and presentations.
Work as part of the team to share ideas
Take an active role in sharing key learning and best practice both informally and in team sharing sessions.
Your Candidate Profile:
Relevant academic or work experience in qualitative and quantitative analysis.
Interest in product innovation and new technologies.
Interest in understanding consumer attitudes & behaviour, and wider cultural trends
An interest in new emerging research techniques and the potential of data and technology.
Feel comfortable and confident working with a range of stakeholders, including clients
Confident in presenting internally.
Skilled at working with and interpreting large volumes of Excel data.
Skilled at using PowerPoint to present in a professional and visually compelling way.
Ability to work both alone and collaboratively with other team members – you will partner with teams in London and New York, alongside colleagues in Cape Town.

Summary:
Your mission at Black Swan will be to support development of the data science capability which underpins our core technology. As a Senior Data Scientist you will be responsible for tackling some of the toughest and most complex problems which Black Swan’s products face. The role combines hands on analysis, complex problem solving and cross functional delivery.
Your duties as a Senior Data Scientist would include:
Working with time series and social data to provide creative data science solutions for our core product line.
Working on difficult, often cutting-edge problems such as disambiguation, relevancy and forecasting.
Creating production ready solutions, working with engineering to deploy solutions and productionise prototypes.
Mentoring and supporting junior team members.

Proven track record of applying machine learning techniques in a production context.
Experience working with text data.
Experience working with engineering teams on optimisation and productization of data science work.
Deep understanding of core machine learning concepts.
Specific Requirements
Proven track record deploying developing in a big data environment, ideally pySpark.
Proficient programmer in Python with solid software development standards, including version control (git), testing (unittest/pytest) and virtual environments.
Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases (incl MongoDB).
Experience with a wide range of NLP problems such as topic modelling, relevancy and disambiguation.
Experience working with word embedding models such as BERT/GloVe.
Experience working in/managing a production code base.
Desirable skills
PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or other physical science.
Programmer in Scala.
Deep learning, specifically for multi-horizon time series forecasting.
Knowledge of network science. Comfortable creating and working with graphs and preforming community detection, finding connected components, eigenvector centrality etc
Experience with Databricks.
Familiarity with the AWS stack.
Experienced in agile development.
Experienced in product-driven data science development.

Summary:
Your mission at Black Swan will be to support development of the data science capability which underpins our core product(s). As a Senior Product Data Scientist you will be responsible for working with stakeholders both inside and outside of the business to define, explore and prototype new product features or improvements to existing product features.
This will involve working closely with internal insights teams or with clients to create new and innovative solutions to business problems. Secondary priorities will involve supporting consulting projects.
Your duties as a Senior Product Data Scientist would include:
Working with time series and social data to provide creative data science solutions for our core product line.
Both iterative improvements to existing capability and new feature development.
Working with non-technical teams across the company to understand requirements and deploy prototype solutions.
Supporting consulting projects on occasion.

We expect a TDD approach to development, producing high quality outputs. You will ensure development automation is implemented in Black Swan using CI tools such as Jenkins and ensure best practices are followed and kept.
Work with development and product teams to create innovative software solutions
Design client-side and server-side architecture
Build the front-end of applications through appealing visual design
Develop and manage well-functioning databases and applications
Test software to ensure responsiveness and efficiency
Troubleshoot, debug and upgrade software
Create security and data protection settings
Write technical documentation
Work with data scientists and analysts to improve software
Essential Skills and Experience:
Good understanding of technology stacks including mobile, hybrid, back, middleware and front-end development
Ideally you will have JVM language and Typescript experience or alternatively a strong background in C# and JavaScript
Knowledge of multiple front-end languages and libraries (e.g. HTML/ CSS, JavaScript, XML, jQuery)
Knowledge of multiple back-end languages (e.g. C#, Java, Python) and JavaScript frameworks (e.g. Angular, React, Node.js)
Familiarity with databases web servers and UI/UX design
Experience managing software development teams
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to customers, executives and non-technical leaders
Understanding of product development and quality assurance processes
Experience and understanding of technical considerations for cross product projects
Experience of managing a technical product build and campaign-based project

Spring Boot, Spring Data and wider Spring experience
Familiarity with multiple database engines including SQL & No SQL
Microservice experience
Understanding of message driven architecture
REST API development with a good understanding of accompanying standards
Experience mentoring software developers
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to customers, executives and non-technical leaders
Understanding of product development and quality assurance processes
Experience and understanding of technical considerations for cross product projects
Knowledge and experience of industry standard tools including budgeting, scheduling, team and task management
Be entrepreneurial, with a collaborative, supportive and team-based approach.
Strong knowledge of Java and/or other back-end languages (e.g. C#, Python) would be an added plus
