Job description

• Follow established procedures to install, commission and maintain Mintek equipment
• Examine electrical problems, identify source of problems and determine method for repair by electrical circuit diagrams
• Ensure that Mintek’s safety standards and procedures are sustained with regard to the scope of work and to uphold prescribed safety standard procedures in their workspace.
• Recommend improved work practices and amendments to procedures affecting workmanship and safety matters.
• Assist the supervisor with performing Safety inspections.
• Comply with client SHEQ procedures.
• Assemble, test and calibrate advanced process measurement instruments.
• Commission and maintain advanced process measurement instruments on site.
• Troubleshoot problems with equipment with minimal input from others.
• Assist development team as required.
• Completion of trip documentation
• Adhere to established operating procedures with regards to project administration.
• Work cooperatively with others
• Share functional expertise

Minimum requirements

• National Diploma
• Completed apprenticeship/work integrated learning
• Driver’s Licence (Code EB) within 6 months of appointment (condition of appointment)
• Experience in the PB Board testing and setup, troubleshooting
• Assembly and onsite commissioning of online analysis equipment (experience with the Mintek Cynoprobe, C2 Meter will be highly advantageous. Similar product experience will be considered)
• Onsite servicing of online analysis equipment (experience with the Mintek Cynoprobe, C2 Meter will be highly advantageous. Similar product experience will be considered)

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:

• Responsible for installation, commissioning, maintenance and operation of equipment and furnace facilities in the Division.
• Plan and execute planned maintenance inspections and prepare equipment and facilities for use. This includes checking the operability of standard equipment and facilities and maintain up-to-date and accurate checklists and inspections and ensure that equipment and facilities are efficiently used and looked after.  
• Attend to breakdowns and provide technical support to ensure efficient execution of mechanical maintenance activities to ensure maximum availability and performance of all equipment and facilities.
• Assist in the commissioning of new equipment/facilities as and when required
• Contribute to continuous improvement efforts on infrastructure through standardization of procedures while delivering on performance against agreed metrics. 
• Provide technical support to internal and external clients to ascertain scope requirements and to timeously deliver on research and commercial projects, including supervision and training of junior staff, interns and contractors involved.
• Evaluate facilities, processes, systems, products or new developments to identify opportunities and deficiencies to ensure continuous improvement.
• Conform to all relevant SHEQ procedures, guidelines and rules, and ensure that relevant risks and hazards are identified and managed through Mintek-approved risk assessments and procedures. This includes ensuring that all relevant SOPs are up to date and complied with.

Minimum requirements

JOB KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

• Minimum 5 years’ experience in a relevant environment, including a minimum of 2 years direct experience operating as a Mechanical Artisan responsible for the installation, commissioning, maintenance and operation of pilot scale DC arc furnace facilities.
• Knowledge or experience with SHEQ systems is non-negotiable.
• A strong understanding of DC arc furnaces is highly advantageous.
• Physically and medically fit.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:

• Responsible for logistics and operational issues, including the commissioning, maintenance, operation and management of pilot scale furnace facilities in the Pyrometallurgy Division.
• Prepare equipment and facilities for use and check the operability of the standard equipment and furnace facilities, including providing technical and procedural advice on how to operate the equipment, which equipment settings are the optimal, etc.
• Operate laboratory and pilot scale furnace equipment with minimum supervision.
• Prepare samples/feed materials from instructions and ensure all equipment is used correctly and responsibly to avoid or minimize damage, including assuming full ownership of specified laboratory / process or plant equipment, and assignment to specific workflows, such as sample/raw materials preparation, furnace operation, housekeeping, etc.
• General management and coordination of bulk sample storage areas and coordinating bulk deliveries, dispatch, and storage of bulk materials. This includes taking full ownership of routine activities such as preparation of bulk samples (e.g. screening, blending, mixing, and drying as well as re-bagging).
• Coordinating housekeeping and maintaining bulk storage areas and materials to ensure materials are stored properly to avoid contamination and/or degradation, including keeping updated inventories to allow effective retrieval. 
• Conform to all relevant SHEQ procedures, guidelines and rules, and ensure that relevant risks and hazards are identified and managed through Mintek-approved risk assessments and procedures. This includes ensuring that all relevant SOPs are up to date and complied with

Minimum requirements

JOB KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

• At least 3 years’ experience in the operation of relevant environment, operating furnaces and/or high temperature equipment.
• Ability to handle and process solid and molten materials in a safe and responsible manner.
• Knowledge or experience with SHEQ systems is non-negotiable.
• Understanding of the pyrometallurgy research environment is an added advantage
• Physically and medically fit 

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Mining Grade 12/N4
• Possession additional relevant qualifications is an added advantage.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:

• Conduct research into machine learning and computational modelling applications in the mining industry;
• Ensure that projects are executed on time and within budget;
• Play a leading role in research projects and the development of products from that research;
• Act as a Principal Investigator on research projects.
• Actively participate in the training, guidance and motivation of junior staff. Participate in team debates and technical decisions;
• Produce professional reports, journal articles, papers and presentations at local and international conferences;
• Conceptualise, design, execute, analyse and troubleshoot independently;
• Maintain and extend existing software products, as well as develop new software products (C /C#/VB.NET)
• Ensure that SHEQ procedures are strictly adhered to and that project work is executed with maximum overall technical efficiency;

• Keep up-to-date at a professional level with technology and business developments that are relevant to the division’s interests.

Minimum requirements

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

The following skills are required for this role:

• Machine learning (supervised and unsupervised machine learning)
• Computer Science or Applied Mathematics M.Sc, or Engineering with Computer Science background M.Sc (must have demonstrated the ability to tackle programming challenges in machine learning)
• Academic writing, ability to present (evidenced by publication record)
• English-speaking
• Python programming language experience
• Suitable candidates must possess at least an M.Sc and be willing to study further in a field aligned with Mintek’s research. A PhD in a machine learning or computational modelling field is preferred.
• 3-5 years relevant vocational experience following first graduation (BSc Hon/BEng).
• C , C# or VB.NET experience a bonus
• Control systems, process modelling, reinforcement learning or a strong statistical background is a bonus.
