    Senior Lecturer / Lecturer: Plant Molecular Genetics Specialising in Genome Editing (Stellenbosch Campus)

    Duties

    • Coordinating, administering, and teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules in molecular genetics and biotechnology.
    • Supervising postgraduate students at BScHons, MSc, and PhD levels.
    • Conducting high-quality research in the use of new breeding technologies, specifically genome editing, for the improvement of crops.
    • Publishing research results in internationally recognised, peer-reviewed journals and presenting the results at national and international conferences.
    • Collaboration and developing partnerships with relevant agricultural industries to secure third-stream research funding.
    • Developing regional, national, and international academic and research networks.
    • Involved in administrative service delivery at the Institute and at departmental, Faculty, University, national, and international levels.

    Job Requirements

    • PhD in molecular plant genetics, molecular plant biology, or equivalent. 
    • Research experience in molecular plant biology, specifically genetic transformation, genome editing and tissue culture techniques, particularly for perennial woody fruit crops.
    • Peer-reviewed scientific publications, commensurate with the level of appointment.
    • Postgraduate supervision in molecular plant biology, specifically genetic transformation and genome editing, commensurate with the level of appointment.
    • Proven experience with, or the ability to obtain external research funding, commensurate with the level of appointment.
    • The ability to work within a multidisciplinary research team.
    • Proven experience or the ability to create and maintain an international research collaboration in the aforementioned field.
    • Good administrative and management skills.
    • The ability to demonstrate and upload SU's core values. 

    Recommendation

    • Experience in bioinformatics software relevant for the analysis of high-throughput sequencing data and genome editing mutation analysis.

    Lecturer in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (Job Level 8)

    Duties    

    • Participating in the selection and administration of postgraduate students in the CBCB.
    • Teaching modules in bioinformatics at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
    • Continuously updating taught undergraduate and postgraduate curricula to reflect advances in bioinformatics.
    • Managing the new structured MSc in Bioinformatics of Infectious Diseases and Pathogen Genomics to ensure the programme¿s smooth operation.
    • Participating in the general operation of the CBCB as arranged with the Director.
    • Establishing and building a research group, preferably focused on the development and application of machine learning and AI in answering questions in biology.
    • Supervising BScHons, MSc and PhD students.
    • Establishing a collaborative research network within the University, as well as nationally and internationally.

    Job Requirements        

    • A PhD in Bioinformatics, Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, or Computer Science, or a related field.
    • Teaching experience (as lecturer, or teaching assistant/tutor at tertiary level), or proven potential to teach undergraduate and postgraduate bioinformatics modules.
    • Proficiency in Python and R.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
    • Demonstrated potential to develop an active research programme.
    • Evidence of research outputs at peer-reviewed international conferences or in recognised journals in the field of bioinformatics or a related field.
    • Demonstarted potential to successfully compete for research funding at both local and international levels.

    Recommendation

    • Working knowledge of additional programming languages such as C++ and Java would be an advantage.
    • Proficiency in the Linux OS and the use of a high-performance computer cluster.
    • Knowledge of SQL and database design.

    Group Exercise Manager

    Duties     

    • The ability to teach exercise to music classes as and when required, both as fill- an and scheduled class instructor.
    • Effectively managing the group exercise budget as prescribed for the group exercise instructors.
    • Taking responsibility for new product development initiatives.
    • Managing all aspects of staffing within the group exercise section, which includes the recruitment of instructors, training and development, performance management, any disciplinary matters, and any administration as required under the guidance of the gymnasium manager.
    • Striving to reach set usage and occupancy targets in line with the strategic objectives of the gymnasium.
    • Preparing monthly and/or weekly reports regarding membership base and usage of all classes.
    • Ensuring that all member queries, complaints and compliments are resolved timeously.

    • Ensuring that Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) are developed, established and implemented across the group exercise section within the facility.
    • Ensuring that all instructors are suitably qualified to teach the respective classes.
    • Organising monthly workshops where knowledge sharing is encouraged.
    • Ensuring that daily, weekly and monthly instructor contact sessions are being held and accurately recorded, including class reviews.
    • Implementing and managing an effective Health and Safety process to ensure that the aerobics facilities are neat and tidy at all times, and complying with the Health and Safety regulations.
    • Assisting the general manager with any other ad hoc projects.
    • Being part of the senior management team of the gymnasium as Head of Department and Manager on Duty.
    • Establishing an effective and positive supply chain management system with key suppliers to the facility.
    • Adhering to the company's financial and HR policies and procedures at all times.

    Job Requirements

    • Grade 12.
    • Related Exercise-to-Music certifications (bootcamps; aerobics; step; spinning; etc.).
    • At least two to three years' experience in the health and fitness industry.
    • Computer literate (Microsoft Office: Word, Excel and Outlook).
    • Excellent planning, administrative and organisational skills.
    • The ability to proactively analyse and solve problems.
    • The ability to adhere to strict deadlines.
    • The ability to work independently and effectively under pressure.
    • Member-centric.
    • Sound knowledge of financial procedures, invoicing and budgeting.
    • Excellent attention to detail.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Afrikaans and English.
    • The ability to thrive in a team within a diverse work environment.
    • Good conflict management skills.
    • Willingness and availability to work after hours and during weekends.

    Recommendation   

    • Management diploma;
    • Previous experience in managing instructors will be a distinct advantage.

    Personal Assistant to the Senior Director DLTE

    Duties

    • Providing reception and administrative support to the Senior Director and the team, including diary and schedule management;
    • Assisting with the administration of meetings, e.g. agenda, minutes, actions;
    • Assisting with document management, including the drafting, formatting and collation of relevant documentation and presentations;
    • Establishing and maintaining accurate digital databases;
