    Research Assistant- Biological Nitrogen Fixation (Three(3) Years Fixed Term Contract) (Roodeplaat)

    Description

    • Basic microbiological techniques including, but not limited to:
    • Operating  Laboratory Equipment.
    • Preparation of microbiological culture media.
    • Preparation of buffers and reagents.
    • Isolation of bacteria from a sample.
    • Serial dilution techniques.
    • Counting bacteria and determination of CFU/ml or CFU/g.
    • Monitoring or assisting glassware washing and sterilization.
    • Aiding with research projects (both laboratory and glasshouse) .
    • Providing scientific assistance to maintenance of the culture collection.

    Requirements

    • BSc in Biological Sciences, Diploma or certificate in Laboratory techniques.
    • 1 year experience in science laboratory.
    • Experience working with samples that contain bacteria or fungi (e.g. soil, water or any other product). 
    • Proficiency in English.
    • A valid driver’s license is an added advantage.

    • Carrying out of farm practices as directed by farm management.  
    • Use and maintenance of tools and equipment that are made available.

    Requirements

    Researcher: Agrometeorology (Pretoria)

    Description

    • Conduct research on climate variability and drought risk management in the agricultural sector.
    • Prepare and submit winning project proposals in collaboration with other scientists.
    • Conduct technology transfer activities related to drought risk management.
    • Contribute towards development and updating of climate services for the agricultural sector.
    • Publish articles in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, newsletters and other media.
    • Undertake scientific networking nationally and internationally.
    • Optimally utilize and supervise human resources allocated to relevant projects.
    • Mentor junior research staff and students/interns.

    Requirements

    • PhD in Agrometeorology / Meteorology / Agriculture / Environmental Science.
    • Proven ability to conduct agricultural drought risk management research.
    • Proficiency in R, Matlab, Python or other scientific programming language
    • The candidate must have a proven research background in agriculture and climate related disciplines.
    • Good publication record in agrometeorology research
    • Ability to work with communities.
    • Willingness to travel away from home for intermediate periods.
    • Good communication skills (written and verbal).
    • Valid driver’s licence (code B/EB).

    Researcher In Vitro Propagation (Roodeplaat)

    Description

    • Project Management & Coordination: The Researcher is responsible for conducting research projects on plant tissue culture method development and optimization, and in vitro propagation techniques (such as somatic embryogenesis, meristem culture, etc.) for mass propagation, in vitro breeding, and virus elimination across the Institute. These include the following aspects of the projects; Research planning and initiation, Equipment and Research Materials , Project Human Resources , Project Finances, Risk Management and Mitigation, Monitoring, Evaluation, reporting and project close out.
    • Research development and Innovation: The Researcher is responsible for conducting research, development and supporting innovation. These include supporting the following research aspects: Invention, Translation, Commercialization, Adoption and Use  
    • Research Collaboration: The Researcher is responsible for supporting strategic research collaboration and collaboration opportunities. These include strategic research partnerships, networks and collaborators, intra-inter institutional collaboration and partnerships.

    Requirements

    • PhD in Plant Physiology, Plant Biotechnology, Plant Production, Botany, Horticulture, or closely related fields.
    • Minimum of 3 years relevant experience in plant tissue culture –related research and 3 relevant peer reviewed publications.
    • Demonstrable experience in plant tissue culture method development and validation.
    • Demonstrable experience in project management, postgraduate student supervision or mentoring.
    • Agricultural research knowledge and skills.
    • Demonstrable experience in external income generation related to economic plants (including essential oil and industrial plants) propagation and cultivation R&D is an added advantage.
    • Good communication skills (verbal and written).
    • Computer literacy.
    • Valid driver’s license.
    • Registration with a scientific and professional body will be an added advantage.
