    Case Law Editor

    About the Role

    • As a Case Law Editor, you will be directly responsible for the editorial production of the All South African Law Reports (All SA) and Butterworths Constitutional Law Reports (BCLR) and produce quarterly online law reports for Competition and Pension Law. Your core function includes drafting, formatting, and ensuring all content meets LexisNexis editorial standards. You will manage the end-to-end publishing workflow for both print and digital formats, ensuring timely delivery of volumes and supplements in line with the agreed publishing schedule.

    Responsibilities

    • Manage Production Schedules: Planning and maintaining detailed content timelines for both print and digital formats, identifying potential bottlenecks, mitigating risks, and communicating deadlines to stakeholders.
    • Ensure Editorial Quality: Reviewing, copyediting, and styling legal manuscripts to align with house style; conducting spot checks, coordinating quality assurance reviews, and monitoring case law updates for accuracy.
    • Prepare and Maintain Content: Overseeing the creation of consolidated indexes, tables of cases, and statutory material; uploading and organizing content in relevant systems, and preparing annual or biannual supplements and cumulative volume
    • Collaborate with Stakeholders: Liaising with authors, freelancers, offshore production teams, and other internal collaborators to address editorial queries and keep publications on schedule.
    • Drive Operational Efficiencies: Identifying areas for workflow improvement, recommending solutions, and implementing best practices to enhance editorial processes.
    • When required, perform any of the above or other related functions in respect with the works/products of other departments

    Requirements

    • LLB or equivalent experience in legal publishing
    • Strong grasp of South African case law and legal terminology and proven editorial skills with high attention to detail and structure
    • Self-driven with capacity to meet daily content targets independently with ability to manage multiple tasks and meet publishing deadlines
    • Competence in MS Office, especially MS Word
    • A keen interest or experience in artificial intelligence (AI) using AI tools to enhance legal research and editorial workflows

    Editor/Publisher II

    About the role

    • We are seeking an Editor to review, edit, and audit summaries, headnotes, and other annotations created by Generative AI for caselaw documents. As an Editor you will draft original content as needed, ensuring that the quality of all content produced meets defined standards for quality and timeliness. This role involves working with caselaw content across multiple regions (e.g., U.S., U.K., Canada ).

    Responsibilities

    • Review and edit AI-generated legal summaries and annotations for accuracy and clarity.
    • Compare content against case text to ensure key legal principles and facts are correctly represented.
    • Draft original legal summaries and annotations when required.
    • Apply legal research and analytical skills to refine content.
    • Ensure consistent adherence to quality, formatting, and timeliness standards.
    • Collaborate with cross-regional editorial teams and adapt to evolving workflows and guidelines.

    Requirements 

    • A degree in law (LLB, JD, or equivalent).
    • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
    • Excellent attention to detail and ability to identify key legal issues.
    • Ability to work independently in a deadline-driven, remote environment.
    • Proficiency with standard software tools (e.g., Microsoft Office) and willingness to learn new platforms.
    • Reliable internet access and a suitable home working setup.
    • Openness to working with AI-driven tools and adapting to new technologies.
    • Based in Johannesburg OR Durban.
