Job Specification

Towards Global Excellence and Stature (GES), the University of Johannesburg (UJ) has prioritised cross-cutting areas of Research and Innovation. Among others, the broad area of Intelligent System(s) has been identified. The IIS will bring to convergence all related works at UJ and will be hosted by the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE).

Expected Outputs

• Completely setup the interdisciplinary institute, including sub-entities, such as the Centre for Telecommunications (CfT);
• Develop and successfully execute a plan for the institution that will ensure financial sustainability, i.e. demonstrate the raising of external funding;
• Attract, retain and ensure measured productivity of Distinguished Visiting Professors, Distinguished Professors, and other academics of high calibre;
• Develop and implement in-contact and online interdisciplinary Master’s in Cognitive Computing;
• Related to the Master’s and for initial roll-out, develop and implement Short-Learning programs;
• Work with relevant UJ entities towards a continuous marketing plan (branding campaign) in key publications that enhance UJ’s stature, such as QS, THE, social media, etc.
• Through externally raised project funding, foster national, regional and international collaboration;
• Student training, particularly at Masters and Doctoral levels;
• Develop a graduate-level professional development programme (PDP) in collaboration with science council(s);
• Research outputs with emphasis on reporting of citations and collaboration impact;
• Work with relevant UJ entities towards innovation indicators, filing of patents, patent-licensing;
• In the medium-to-long term, work with external sponsors/relations towards setting up independent infrastructure for the ISI.

Minimum Requirements.

The incumbent should:

• Be a person of high standing and stature in the broad discipline identified;
• Be an outstanding and innovative researcher who has made a major impact in their field;
• Be recognised internationally as an undisputed leader in their field and/or have received substantial international recognition for their research contributions
• Have an excellent record in attracting postgraduate students and postdoctoral research fellows
• Have a Doctoral Degree or equivalent qualification;
• Be rated by the National Research Foundation;
• Reside full time in South Africa for the duration of appointment.
