    Senior Treasury Correspondent

    Job description

    Job Description

Reuters is seeking a highly motivated reporter for the position of Senior Treasury Correspondent based in Johannesburg, that will direct the coverage of Africa’s most industrialized economy and also oversee the coverage of other economies in the region, including the meltdown in Zimbabwe, oil-producing Angola and copper-driven Zambia. The role is demanding and rewarding in equal measure and ideal for someone with a yearning and ability to develop sources and break news and be part of the sharpest end of our news file. The ideal candidate will develop and cultivate sources on monetary policy, the finance ministry and write in-depth thought pieces for long form initiative stories connecting monetary policy with the real economy and households.

    • The successful candidate will be covering daily releases of data from Africa’s most important economy and policy announcements, a $180 billion bond market and the world’s most deeply traded emerging market currency, ratings agencies that are circling like vultures, eyeing sluggish growth and whether to cut to junk and be ready to win timings on a daily basis against the main opposition agency. One of the over-arching themes is a battle for the Treasury between politicians who want state coffers to be opened up for expenditure, and the more principled politicians that believe in fiscal prudence.
    • The successful candidate will be a strong team player, and be part of a three-person reporting unit in Johannesburg and working in close cooperation with stringers across the region to break news and write with authority on monetary policy and be on the inside track of the compelling story of how South Africa, Zimbabwe, Angola and Zambia – in varying degrees - are trying to drag themselves out of their respective economic slumps before the money runs out. He or she will cover debt and loan issues in the region, breaking news on their origination and pricing and then writing longer analysis pieces. He or she will also cover the money and forex markets, especially in Johannesburg.
    • The successful candidate should have strong news judgment, a flair for writing compelling copy, and a strong commitment to beating the competition with breaking news and scoops of interpretation. They should be able to take part in the wider running of the bureau by handling regular Slot duties and working weekend shifts.
