Position is available in the Operations Intelligence Analytics team where application of predictive analytics, big data and operations research skills is used to provide unique data-driven answers to exciting problems in servicing, operations and other areas of the business. The team has access to structured and unstructured data and makes use of the latest international cutting edge big data architecture.

Key Purpose

The successful applicant will be working in collaboration with a highly specialized and growing team investigating ways to optimise how Discovery Health understands and services its clients.

Responsibilities will include:

• Identify and build appropriate models for use in Discovery Health operations and servicing environments
• Implementing results for use in operational environments
• Monitoring model performance
• Mining large structured and unstructured datasets for data exploration to find new insights to inform operational efficiency and interaction strategies
• Present data and model findings in a way that provides actionable insights
• Improve processes and databases where opportunities arise

Competencies

Technical skills:

• Experience in at least one statistical modelling tool (SPSS modeller (preferred), SAS)
• Experience using optimisation and/or simulation tools such as LINGO, AIMMS, Arena, Simio etc
• Solid coding and programming skills with SQL, and at least one of R, Python, Spark or similar
• Some exposure to the Scala programming language preferred
• Proficient understanding of distributed computing principles utilising Hadoop and MapReduce
• Strong analytical and statistical / machine learning skills
• Ability to formulate problem statements and develop a plan for tackling the problem
• Above average ability to work with, analyse and communicate findings from data (verbal and written)
• Ability to source and combine data from both structured and unstructured sources

Professional Qualifications & Experience

• Honours or Master’s degree in either Data Science, Statistics, Operations Research or Applied Mathematics with some experience in software engineering, computer science or working with big disparate sets of data, OR
• Honours or Master’s degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering with solid experience in statistical modelling, data mining, machine learning or optimisation
• Other analytical qualifications will also be considered if accompanied by the relevant experience
• At least 3 years of work experience preferable.
