    HSE Manager

    Job description

    Applications are invited for the above-mentioned position in the Health, Safety & Environmental Department, based at Greenpark in Epping. The successful incumbent will report to the Plant Manager.

    Purpose Of The Position

    The incumbent in the position will be responsible for establishing and maintenance of a fully operational HSE Department within Distell Greenpark and to ensure that the HSE standards of the company are obtained and maintained with competent and empowered employees.

    Key Performance Areas would include, but are not limited to:

    • Develop and maintain risk management policies, procedures and standards in line with all legislative requirements
    • Communicate risk control requirements as well as policies, procedures and standards to relevant role-players
    • Implementing and maintaining Distell’s Risk Management Program to ensure compliance with relevant legislation
    • Conducting hazard identification, risk assessments, audits and investigations
    • Report status and level of compliance to risk control program to management
    • Assist site management on Operational and Capital Expenditure requirements
    • Implementing, maintaining and ensuring compliance with relevant Group Safety & Fire Prevention Standards; OSH Act; COID Act; Municipal & Building regulations; SABS codes; etc.
    • Liaising with emergency services
    • Oversee and/or conduct investigations of incidents / accidents
    • Ensure that procedures are in place for the protection of assets
    • Ensure integrity of all monitoring systems
    • Perform risk and security investigations as and when required
    • Ensure compliance to the QMS (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, BRC, IFS, HACCP, Organic, ISO 17025, SANS 1841)
    • Ensure team/employees complies and adheres to all relevant policies, procedures, work instruction and SOPs at all times
    • Accept the role of Food Defence- and Environmental team leader
    • Appointment of skilled and qualified employees
    • Identify training and development needs
    • Perform corrective or disciplinary actions
    • Conduct performance reviews twice a year
    • In conjunction with the Financial Manager, budget annually for capital expenditure and expense budgets.
    • Monthly control of expense budget
    • Release of purchase requisitions
    • Responsible for a business plan for the HSE department through planning and setting of objectives that is aligned to Distell's mission and objectives
    • Implement new ideas and improve methods, systems and work processes that will lead to higher quality or reduced cost
    • Manage change effectively and achieve transformation targets
    • Implement talent management and ensure that succession plans and development actions are in place
    • Ensuring team members have clear, current and measurable goals
    • Train, mentor, coach team on specific tasks or activities. Give advice, guidance and feedback on the basis of knowledge and expertise
    • Actively participate in E² business initiatives
    • Develop plans and review performance against targets regularly to ensure continuous improvement
    • Manage and oversee 3rd party Security Contracting Company and their service level agreement

    The successful candidate must have the following qualification, skills and experience:

    • Bachelor's Degree in Risk Management / Auditing or Engineering or its equivalent in education and experience with a major area of concentration in Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Risk Management or related field
    • At least 3-5 years’ relevant experience in a similar role within an FMCG manufacturing environment
    • Extensive knowledge of the BRC standards, HACCP standards, DIFR system, ISO 14001, ISO 9000, ISO 18000, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Construction Regulations, National Building Regulations, COIDA, relevant SANS Code
    • Sound knowledge of Quality & Environmental Management Systems
    • Ability to plan, organize, co-ordinate and facilitate
    • Strong investigative and initiating skills
    • Ability to work independently and under pressure
    • Ability to influence management to follow risk management strategies
    • Sound interpersonal and communication skills
    • Business and financial acumen
    • Strategic thinking
    • Influencing/motivational skills
    • Team player with strong relationship building ability
    • Advanced PC literacy (MS Office, SAP)
    • Articulate with good presentation skills
    • Excellent leadership ability
    • High levels of emotional intelligence
    • Action orientation
