Job Summary

To provide a fully comprehensive legal advisory, and compliance service to the company which includes, but is not limited to the involvement in Governance and Compliance requirements of the Region in line with the Group Frameworks, Policies and Procedures, operational legal risk issues, permitting, SHEQ, commercial, litigation and contractual negotiations that relates to the company.

The appointee should:

• Have a Legal Degree (LLB or 4 - 6 year Legal Qualification)
• Have 4-6 years post admission experience in a legal environment.
• Be a compliance expert in a corporate environment is key
• Have advanced reading comprehension, writing, decision-making, critical thinking and active listening skills.
• Have the ability to work independently and solve problems.
• Interact with the Senior Managers and Line Managers with regard to legal advice, negotiations and compliance.
• Be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Key responsibilities:

• Ensuring compliance, maintenance and day-to-day oversight of Governance and Compliance for the Region (in line with Gold Fields Group Frameworks, Policies and Procedures).
• Analyze applicable governance principles, policies and internal control to develop action plans for ensuring compliance.
• General commercial work and support; negotiating; drafting of a wide range of legal commercial documentation and agreements; assisting with regulatory approvals and the upkeep of various compliance management tools; execution and implementation of agreements; and managing of external advisors.
• Support the VP: Head of Legal and Compliance (SA Region) in preparing, analyzing, commenting and interpreting legal documents for all business areas.
• Prepare legally sound and contextually relevant legal opinions on identified legal requests from the business areas and validate against the overall company objectives to be able to mitigate any liability for the company.
• Engage with internal stakeholders across the company and the company's external stakeholders to assist with legal related queries.
• Engages and supervises external legal counsel within the legal framework who provides legal advice or representation in areas of special expertise or in litigation in a cost effective manner.
• Assist and act under the direction of the VP: Head of Legal and Compliance (SA Region) in day to day legal and compliance issues.

It will be advantageous if applicants have:

4-6 Years post admission experience in a legal environment. Compliance experience in a corporate environment is key.
