    Sub-Editor

    Job Description

    BMI Research is looking for a South Africa-based sub-editor with:

    • English language fluency.
    • Professional English-language editing experience.
    • Excellent written English, grammar and editing skills.
    • Knowledge of and an interest in global politics, economics and business.
    • A proven ability to meet tight and overlapping deadlines.
    • Excellent attention to detail.
    • A high level of numeracy.

    Job purpose

    To sub-edit country risk, industry and company intelligence content across a range of online daily stories, and weekly, monthly and quarterly reports. You will be based in BMI Research's South Africa office and will be part of a team of around 13 sub-editors primarily based in London. There will be opportunities to develop areas of specialism while working on a wide range of publications and subjects. You will have a weekly workload allocation and be expected to organise your own time to complete this. You will work with our bespoke content management system. This role reports to the head of South Africa on a day-to-day basis, and remotely to the chief sub-editor.

    Main duties and responsibilities

    • Editing political, economic and sector-specific content across a variety of industries and countries, with a focus on Sub-Saharan Africa-specific content.
    • Editing content within our own content management system, and publishing it onto our website.
    • Managing own daily and weekly workload.
    • Communicating closely with analysts in the South Africa office and with the wider research, sub-editorial and production teams to ensure timely publication of content.
    • Updating the content management system to record and track publication workflow.
    • Ensuring quality standards of content, as set out in the editorial guidelines.
    • Contributing to sub-editorial process improvements.

    PERSON SPECIFICATION

    Essential

    Qualifications / Competencies / Skills / Experience

    • Fluent English speaker.
    • Experience of editing and proofreading within an English-language environment.
    • Eye for detail and quality.
    • Ability to work within tight deadlines.
    • Excellent time management skills.
    • Good oral and written communication skills.
    • Interest in current affairs and international business.
    • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.

    Preferred

    • Previous experience of working on industry/economic editorial content.
    • Previous experience working with a content management system.
    • Online publishing experience.
    • Knowledge of copyright and libel law.
    • Knowledge of economics.
