    Associate Professor(Biostatistics)

    Core purpose of the job:

    • Plan, design and implement Epidemiological and Biostatistical research projects
    • Analyse and interpret statistical data to monitor and identify results of provincial and country-wide health studies, populations at risk and community environmental factors causing disease
    • Conduct research through the Faculty of Health Sciences.

     

    Key performance areas:

    • Interpret and analyse statistical data for public health managers and advise of implications of the data for public health policy; define the type of data to gather for research and surveys, gather and review current statistical literature; define populations of interest to develop health studies for specific groups in the province and/or country and develop statistical and technical summary reports based on surveys
    • Implement epidemiological and bio statistical research projects by planning, coordinating and directing the collection, coding and entry of data; develop and maintain computerised databases to monitor the current health status of target groups
    • Evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of intervention or control strategies and determine health status outcomes in order to ensure that established programme standards are met
    • Consult with staff members from within the faculty, other departments as well as public and private community agencies and health providers to coordinate surveillance of health data
    • In collaboration with other scientific researchers, design and implement research, analyse and interpret data and participate in drafting peer-reviewed manuscripts, to study and answer questions concerning the health of South African citizens
    • Develop and design studies with detailed analysis plans that are clinically relevant and/or actionable in a public health setting; perform data extraction, link and integrate large datasets and conduct data analysis to identify statistical relationships
    • Write scientific reports, manuscripts and other products, including detailed descriptions of analyses and clinical relevance of results.

     

    Core competencies:

    • Ability to provide statistical consultation concerning the formulation of objectives, scope, and approaches for biostatistical aspects of health-related research projects
    • Knowledge of principles and methods of biostatistics and demography, the principles, theories and procedures of epidemiology, including study design, statistical analysis and causal inference; knowledge of current research and trends in public health
    • Knowledge of appropriate computer processing methods used to generate, organise and display statistical and research data
    • Ability to apply mathematical formulas to make calculations, select and apply appropriate statistical methods for collecting and summarising varied and complex field data
    • Ability to gather, organise, analyse and report epidemiological and biostatistical data, evaluate possible intervention strategies. Apply epidemiological and biostatistical design methodology and use software programs to perform statistical analyses.
    • Ability to read and understand complex technical information in mathematical or diagrammatical form and to interpret public health-related technical information
    • Ability to prepare and write reports concerning the findings of statistical analysis and issue research publications
    • Teaching of fundamentals of clinical epidemiology to undergraduate medical students, and of research methods and clinical epidemiology to postgraduate students.

     

    Minimum requirements:

    Associate Professor: 

    • PhD in Statistics or Biostatistics or Biometry or Epidemiology from an accredited institution
    • A minimum of five to seven years’ experience of statistical consultation in a clinical or health related area
    • Evidence of strong publication background of at least 10-15 research articles in DHET/ISI accredited journals
    • Evidence to undertake as lead or co-researcher on health-related grants OR evidence of development of statistical components of research projects
    • Proficiency in programming of at least one statistical software and ability to conduct complex statistics
    • Ability to teach biostatistics or statistics at undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across all disciplines in the Faculty of Health Sciences.
