Associate Professor / Professor and Centre Director for Sustainable Mining (Supplementary Role) (P003196) at North West University

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
As the most senior representative, manage the operational delivery and performance to achieve the faculty Teaching and Learning Plan. Provide functional and academic leadership and enforce quality assurance across sites of delivery / campuses and in all modes of delivery.
To teach at undergraduate level and to actively engage in research.
 
JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE ROLE OF PROFESSOR:
Teaching:

•  Preparation of Study guides and Subject material.
•  Delivery of lectures and practical sessions.
•  Marking and assessments.
•  General Module administration.

Final year supervision: 

•  Topic selection and general guidance to students.
•  Liaising with external stakeholders.
•  Supervision and guidance to final year project students.

Research

•  Conducting of fundamental and applied research.
•  Involvement in applicable research groups.
•  Supervision of postgraduate students.
•  Involvement in professional/academic societies.

School Administration:

•  Representation at market events
•  Involvement in Engineering schools
•  Representation on Faculty-specific committees
•  General office administration.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE ROLE AS SCHOOL DIRECTOR (SUPPLEMENTARY):
Teaching:

•  Primarily teaching in the Faculty’s programmes on Sustainability and Sustainable Mining, but involvement in appropriate undergraduate teaching of other programmes also possible.

Final year supervision:

•  Appropriate final year supervision for 3-6 students per year. 

Research

•  Building a research portfolio for industry applied as well as fundamental research in Sustainability and Sustainable Mining, drawing on existing and new expertise in the Faculty and beyond. 

Centre Administration:

•  Ensure the commercial implementation of research results 

Minimum requirements

•  A BEng degree in any Engineering specialisation (NQF level 7)
•  A PhD in Industrial Engineering, Mining Engineering or related (NQF level 10) 
•  A minimum of two years work experience in a Higher Education context
•  A minimum of three years relevant management experience.
•  Registrable as an ECSA professional engineer within one year of taking office
•  A research portfolio as can be expected from the level of appointment
• For appointment as professor and director: A portfolio that can qualify for NRF-rating
• For appointment as associate professor and director:  A portfolio that can qualify for NRF-rating within the next three years
• For appointment as senior lecturer and director: An acceptable research portfolio

KEY FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:

•  Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), email and internet 
•  Knowledge of the appropriate assessment theory and practice to enhance student performance 
•  Research methodology and technical writing 
•  A proven commitment to teaching and learning, including a willingness to become involved in students’ educational development and wellbeing 
•  Knowledge of modern platforms (e.g. whiteboard technology, eFundi, etc.) to enhance the ongoing
