Data Engineer at Telesure Investment Holdings (TIH)

Job Purpose

• Responsible for building data pipelines and maintaining and building production data systems. Extract quantifiable insights from TIH's data assets. Work with and make data available for valuable insights.

Responsibilities

Application Software Development

• Develop existing applications and contribute to development of new applications by analyzing and identifying areas for modification and improvement. Develop new routine applications to meet business requirements.

Data Exploration

• Conduct research and select relevant information to enable analysis of key themes and trends using primary data sources and business intelligence tools.
• Gather Data from both internal and external data sources.
• Research and development of new tools and data techniques.
• Conduct feature extraction and design.
• Develop ETL data extractions jobs.

Data Management

• Manage key aspects of the data management system. This includes being responsible for developing or operating key elements of the system.
• Ensure data cleaning, mapping and understanding the data.

Information and Business Advice

• Resolve complex queries from internal or external customers or suppliers by providing information on policies and/or procedures, referring the most complex issues to others.

Advanced and Predictive Analytics

• Support interpretation of advanced and predictive analytics data, using specialized software tools and functionalities.
• Implement models/data products.
• In some instances complete a piece of work to form part of larger project.

Insights and Reporting

• Prepare and coordinate the completion of various data and analytics reports.
• Ensure monitoring and quantification of model/data product's effects on TIH, its clients and stakeholders.

Stakeholder Engagement

• Assist with stakeholder engagement by arranging actions, meetings, events, and supporting materials to promote stakeholder understanding and commitment.
• Build relationships across the business.

Project Management

• Support others by carrying out a range of project management activities.
• Deliver on project outcomes and timelines management.

Personal Capability Building

• Develop own capabilities by participating in assessment and development planning activities as well as formal and informal training and coaching; gain or maintain external professional accreditation where relevant to improve performance and fulfill personal potential. Maintain an understanding of relevant technology, external regulation, and industry best practices through ongoing education, attending conferences, and reading specialist media.
• Responsible for upskilling in data, modelling and business knowledge.

Performance Management

• Prioritise own workflow and ensure work is completed to the required standards of productivity, quality and timeliness; use performance management systems to improve personal performance.
• Follow instructions from manager and meet timelines.
• Ensure own work is signed-off by manger.

Education

• Grade 12/ SAQA Accredited Equivalent (Essential); 3-year degree in Information Technology / Sciences / Informatics / Data Mining / Computer Sciences (Essential); Master’s Degree in Information Technology / Sciences / Informatics / Data Mining / Computer Sciences (Advantageous) (Required)

Experience

• 2 to 5 years working experience within an development, data science or computer science environment (Essential); Experience in the Financial Services Industry – specifically Short-Term Insurance (Advantageous); Any data engineering experience (Advantageous).
