    Engineering Apprentice: Millwright (18.2)

    The role will support the maintenance team in ensuring the efficient operation of milling and packing equipment through hands-on training, technical learning, and practical application whilst under the supervision of qualified millwrights. The exposure gained will be aligned to complete to the training modules required for trade certification. The apprentice will gain exposure to mechanical, electrical, and automation systems while contributing to the plant’s reliability and safety goals.

    Minimum Requirements    

    • SA citizenship
    • Matric / Grade 12 with strong results in Mathematics and Physical Science.
    • N5/N6 Certificate in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (or currently enrolled).
    • Enrolled in or eligible for a recognized engineering apprenticeship program (Mechanical, Electrical, or Mechatronics).
    • Able to work shifts, public holidays, and overtime when required.
    • Basic understanding of mechanical and electrical principles.
    • Strong interest in industrial machinery and manufacturing processes.
    • Good communication skills and a willingness to learn.
    • Strong work ethic and positive attitude.

    Duties & Responsibilities    
    Key Responsibilities:

    Technical Training & Development

    • Participate in structured on-the-job training across mechanical, electrical, and automation disciplines.
    • Learn to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment such as roller mills, sifters, conveyors, pneumatic systems, and packing lines.
    • Learn to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and manuals.
    • Assist in routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and minor repairs under supervision.

    Support Maintenance Activities

    • Shadow experienced Millwrights or other trade tested artisans during breakdowns and planned maintenance.
    • Help document maintenance tasks and update equipment logs.
    • Learn to use tools, diagnostic equipment, and CMMS software.

    Health, Safety & Compliance

    • Follow all safety protocols and wear appropriate PPE.
    • Participate in toolbox talks, safety drills, and risk assessments.
    • Understand and comply with food safety and hygiene standards (e.g., ISO 22000).

    Continuous Improvement

    • Contribute ideas for improving equipment reliability and maintenance efficiency.
    • Participate in 6S, Lean, or Kaizen initiatives within the engineering department.

    Academic & Practical Integration

    • Attend technical college or training institution as part of the apprenticeship program.
    • Attend other operational training as required to develop depth of competence and become a well-rounded artisan.
    • Complete coursework, logbooks, and assessments on time.
    • Apply theoretical knowledge to real-world plant operations to create tangible value.
