    ESD Investment Analyst

    Job Description

    Group Balance Sheet Management has a mandate to drive the implementation of effective resource management including Enterprise Supplier Development (ESD).  

    The primary purpose of ESD is to:

    • Support inclusive economic growth and job creation through the OML entrepreneurship ecosystem. 
    • Ensure shared value between OML and SMMES supported and sustainability of the ESD Fund Derive overall strategic benefit to OML segments.
    • Preference will be given to suitably qualified candidates in line with the Employment Equity Plan of Old Mutual South Africa and the specific business unit in question. 
    • This role is critical in the sourcing, selection and assessment of suitable enterprises for loan funding. 
    • The role requires an individual with ability to drive the strategic functioning of ESD that ranges from identifying a tangible pipeline that will result in ESD opportunities i.e.Perform detailed investment analyses and recommend appropriate structuring
    • Assist with identifying tangible pipeline
    • Manage the operations of the 2 ESD Pty companies
    • Present investment analysis and update on the portfolio to the Investment Committee
    • Assessment of funding applications per the investment guidelines and mandates as well as evaluating the viability of the transactions by participating in the due diligence process.
    • Analysing financial statements and modelling of financial projections for funding purposes. The incumbent must be able interact with clients and colleagues from other segments and wider stakeholders. 
    • The successful candidate must display a passion for SMME development
    • Must be proactive and consistently be in a position to provide guidance and direction to another employee and furthermore take initiative and be focused on execution and delivery. 
    • The role also requires strong report writing skills and someone that is knowledgeable in the lending industry.

    Business Development

    • Generates pipeline for the ESD funds through interactions with segments and small enterprises to source deal opportunities.
    • Identifies funding and business skills.
    • Implements loan financing and monitors progress, including repayments and business growth.
    • Evaluate viability and long-term sustainability of the business and prepares and presents a motivation to the Investment Committee.
    • Performs due diligence company valuation.

    Communication & Reporting

    • Prepares reports to IC, Manager of ESD and COO of GBSM regularly, Responsible Board Exco and Board reporting. This may be include annual reports to DTI as well.

    Marketing & Research

    • Finds marketing opportunities and liaises with potential customers on behalf of enterprises

    Relationship Building

    • Develops collaborative relationships between segments, sponsors and ESD team.
    • Represents ESD & OML where needed externally.

    Strategy

    • Delivers the ESD strategy, business planning and projects. 
    • Adhere to and refine the ESD Operating model include assigning work to junior team member.

    Team Effectiveness

    • Balances own priorities with directing and motivating others.
    • Guides and directs staff to achieve excellence

    Qualifications and Experience

    • Suitable financial qualification - CA (SA) or B Com (Hons) a must.
    • 2-3 years post qualification experience. 
    • Knowledge of ESD and FSC will be advantageous, interpretation and design of legal contracts/loan agreements as well as an understanding of typical performance and value measures.

    • Able to analyse complex data, draw conclusions and compile reports of a high standard on findings.
    • Able to remain organised while working across multiple projects and manage stress.
    • Identifies, understands and acts on broader opportunities in order to drive longer-term value-adding change.
    • Demonstrates a willingness to take calculated risks to achieve stretched performance goals.
    • Displays consistent drive and perseverance in order to deliver tangible results and execution focused.
    • Be collaborative by proactively establishing and maintaining relationships. Able to handle a wide range of relationship challenges including conflict and gaining trust to collaborate.
