    Golf Course Maintenance Manager

    Job Purpose:

    • To maintain and develop the Golf Course and to maintain all equipment and facilities.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    Minimum education (essential):

    • Matric
    • Diploma in Turf Grass management

    Minimum education (desirable):

    • Further relevant courses

    Minimum applicable experience (years):

    • 5 years of experience as a Golf Superintendent or 1st Assistant

    Required nature of experience:

    • Practical experience in agronomy, and plant and soil sciences is required.
    • Must know pesticide usage.  
    • The incumbent must possess knowledge of the game of golf and a working knowledge of the construction, establishment, and maintenance practices employed on and around the golf course. 
    • Must have efficient knowledge in the use of fertilizers, chemicals, and sand applications in various areas on the golf courses.

    Skills and knowledge required:

    • The incumbent will be required to have strong leadership skills and in particular, the ability to plan, delegate and communicate effectively.
    • The ability to prioritise work and execute the work schedule timeously is essential. Good judgement is required. The incumbent must be a self-starter.
    • Knowledge of management and maintenance of greens, fairways, and roughs.
    • Knowledge of use and operating standards of equipment and tools used in golf course construction and maintenance work.
    • Skill in recruiting, supervising, training, monitoring, evaluating, and motivating personnel.
    • Interpersonal skills to resolve conflict and work with supervisors, officials, employees, members, and the general public.
    • Knowledge of safe use, mixing, and application of chemicals and commercial products. (certificate in Pest control officer required)
    • Knowledge of the game of golf, golf rules, and methods of play.
    • Ability and knowledge to lay out irrigation and drainage patterns, and construct tees and/or greens.

    Other: 

    • Valid driver's license

    Key Performance Areas, Weights, and Objectives
    Management & Reporting (30%)

    • To develop and manage the regular maintenance of the Golf Course and to present it in optimum condition at all times
    • To continuously develop the golf course in accordance with a long-range development plan ie, trees, bunkers, stream, etc
    • To set objectives and to manage these objectives
    • To present a monthly update to the Greens Committee
    • Staff disciplinary and warnings for non-performers
    • Follow all Company rules and Procedures at all times.

    Maintenance (20%)

    • Responsible for all phases of Golf Maintenance and Agronomic operations, cost control, and personnel.
    • To maintain the course equipment, irrigation system, vehicles, and facilities
    • Works closely with, advises, and coordinates with the Golf Director on any issues related to golf course maintenance.
    • To remain abreast of all current developments and technologies in course management and to apply these where applicable
    • Directs and participates in the construction and maintenance of the grounds.
    • Oversees the care and maintenance of the turf, ornamental plants, shrubs, trees, and wetlands on the facility grounds.
    • Manages an aggressive water usage tracking plan and irrigation systems
    • Schedules maintenance practices around member play and outings to maximize efficiency and minimize disruption to members.

    Budgeting (20%)

    • To produce and manage within the Course expense budget
    • To develop and manage an ongoing equipment replacement programme
    • Plans and budgets for additional or replacement capital equipment.
    • Develops annual operating budget and plans for maintenance and capital improvement projects.
    • Maintains records and completes required reporting. Order parts, supplies, and equipment as needed.

    Team Management (20%)

    • To lead and supervise the course staff
    • To continuously improve work practices, procedures, and processes
    • To act as a representative in Union negotiations
    • To train and develop the course staff
    • Administers and enforces all Company rules, regulations, and policies for staff.
    • Directs and assists the staff on the planting of new vegetation, the replacement, spraying, pruning, and trimming of trees and shrubs, the preparation of soil plant beds for aesthetically pleasing arrangements, and tending to high-stress areas.
    • Recruit, supervise, and retain maintenance staff. Conducts employee performance evaluations and exercises disciplinary action.
    • Oversee subordinates in proper and safe operation and maintenance of mechanical and power equipment.
