    Head of Corporate Security and Brand Protection

    Market Complexity

    Diageo SA operates in a complex, ever changing and extremely exciting market environment. Diageo SA has emerged as the leading spirits business in South Africa facing competition from long established competitors and aggressive emerging players.

    The liquor market in South Africa operates through multiple customer channels and routes to market. This is in order to effectively service consumers across an extremely diverse range of socio-economic circumstances, cultural affiliations and geographical ranges.

    Our extensive spirits brand portfolio services consumers across our diverse nation and we must continuously strive to keep up with the fast changing market trends and challenges inherent in that.

    Key Functional Capabilities:

    • Provide functional leadership, develop and manage the performance of Diageo SA security team.
    • Conduct country security risk assessments, site security risk assessments, and security reviews/audits to recommend cost effective solutions to mitigate security risks.
    • Ensure that appropriate security policy, plans and procedures are in place across Diageo SA’s businesses in order to deal with a range of threats, and ensure that these are reviewed on a regular basis. 
    • Develop and recommend operational and capital budgets for security.
    • Deliver security briefings to international assignees, business travellers, executives, contractors, and staff.
    • Liaise with local law enforcement, outsourced security contractors and relevant consultants.
    • Implement and maintain personal and residential security procedures for international assignees and local staff as appropriate.
    • Select and appoint security services providers, in collaboration with procurement management.
    • Manage private security contracts and monitor their performance.
    • Provide Diageo SA Executive and the Head of Market Security timely and appropriate monthly security reports on emerging security threats, and submit relevant security reports that include security improvements and trends.
    • Develop & implement security training and awareness programs, and organize security awareness campaigns as necessary.
    • Keep detailed record of security incidents and other important data for learning and continues improvement.
    • Coordinate and or manage event security & executive protection.
    • Assist in the development (of security aspects) of crisis and business continuity plans within Diageo SA, and participate as a member of the country crisis management team.
    • Provide timely security advice to Diageo SA management and employees in order to protect people, assets, information, brand and reputation.  This also includes the provision of personal safety advice for sales staff travelling in South Africa
    • Ensure that all Diageo SA security operations are conducted in accordance with The Group Security Standards, local & international laws and regulations, and in line with the Code of Business Conduct.
    • Manage or investigate breaches of the Code of Business Conduct and suspected criminal matters where requested, and monitor security developments (generally), and Diageo SA security incidents (specifically)
    • Develop and drive mitigation plans and strategy to protect our brands.
    • Lead Diageo SA’s drive to protecting its brands and reputation from illicit trade, including contra banding, counterfeiting etc.
    • Engaging and advising the senior leadership team on the size and mix of the issue to ensure the appropriate strategy is deployed to protect our brands.
    • Work with internal and external stakeholders to gather evidence and agree next steps.
    • Liaise & Share best practice with the Global Brand Assurance team

    Purpose of Role

    • To work in conjunction with the Corporate Security team in developing and implementing security policies, practices, awareness programmes or processes in order to mitigate risk faced by our people, assets, brands and information. 
    • Providing a professional, responsive and proactive security service to the company and to react in accordance with Risk, Loss and Security procedures to ensure the:
    • Security of all company Personnel (including close protection) and Property – risk faced at 3rd party sites.
    • Security against threats and/or actions from criminal elements
    • Security of company Brands and the Integrity thereof.
    • Protection of company image – including Security surrounding events.
    • Commercial security of company.
    • Propose and agree long term and annual AC plan for South Africa
    • Protect our brands from counterfeit, illicit trading and contraband
    • Propose and agree long term approach to illicit trading and lead the implementation of this plan within South Africa

    Top Accountabilities

    • To review security procedures on all Diageo SA sites and recommend appropriate policies to ensure that personnel, assets, sites, brands and intellectual property are protected.
    • Review personal security and recommend changes as and when necessary to remain ahead of changing requirements.
    • Participate in crisis management in the event of commercial or executive threat.
    • Ensure technical security systems on all sites provide the optimum level of cost effective security by maintaining up to date knowledge of available systems and recommending changes as appropriate.
    • Maintain up to date knowledge of threat assessment to property, assets and personnel.
    • Assist (on request and as required) with information gathering on counterfeit product
    • Review security of computer systems and intellectual property and advice where necessary.
    • Close interaction with GM and other managers to ensure authoritative security advice appropriate to areas of work.
    • Review all existing security practices for equipment and contracts to ensure effectiveness.
    • Make recommendations for the rationalisation of all aspects of security.
    • Conduct/supervise investigations into suspected criminal matters where requested, and liaise with relevant law enforcement agencies, where appropriate.
    • Assist appropriate brand managers and outsourced events companies with event and activation security ensuring alignment with Diageo “Events Risk Management Policy” as well as SA legislative requirements.
    • Conduct proactive operational planning to ensure that all high profile visitors in the main and secondary markets as well as International visitors are sufficiently secured when conducting visits to these markets.
    • Stay abreast of criminal activities in Region and provide monthly feedback on trends affecting the distribution of Diageo product.
    • React to all company security related incidents when they occur and coordinate Service Providers in a cost effective manner.
    • Development into a Code of Business Conduct (CoBC) champion and to conduct professional investigations in an ethical manner should the CoBC be breached by internal stakeholders or external stakeholders.
    • Network with all internal and external business security partners including SAPS, NPA, SARS, etc. to ensure that Diageo gives and receives optimal support when challenged with security issues as well as staying abreast of crime challenges in the allocated Region.
    • To develop and implement in conjunction with CS team, business security awareness programmes which would empower all Diageo SA personnel.

    Brand Protection

    Lead initiatives and work closely with:

    • The market MD and LD who are ultimately responsible for the output and resourcing of the Brand Protection drive
    • Other central functions such as Sales, Marketing, Consumer Planning, Legal, Corporate Security etc. when require
    • Alcohol Industry stakeholders – including government, competitors
    • External agencies – including researchers, enforcement teams

    Qualifications and Experience Required

    Qualifications

    A degree in Security Risk Management, Business, Finance or Law (NQF 7).

    A relevant tertiary qualification in a discipline that is related to the role will be accepted (e.g. Law, Criminal Justice, Political Science, International Relations etc.).

    Experience

    The job holder should have:

    • In-depth knowledge of security issues, almost certainly acquired from several years’ experience in the police service, armed forces or security industry.  Knowledge of interaction between company and law enforcement agencies in kidnap/extortion and crisis management cases.
    • High level of presentation skills, both written and verbal.  Experience of commerce in relation to the police and crime.  Knowledge of electronic surveillance systems.
    • Computer literacy skills and be proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word and Internet applications.
    • Awareness to negotiate terms and structure of security contracts.
    • Experience in working with complex syndicate investigations and information/intelligence gathering.
    • Exceptional knowledge of court proceedings.
    • The ability to apply sound judgment and act on own initiative.
    • Well-developed written, verbal and reporting communication in English.
    • The ability to build strong relationships with external service providers and partners.
    • Creative reasoning in order to identify key issues and alternative solutions.
    • Ability to plan and conduct operational activities in stressful and time critical circumstances.
